Few composers and arrangers have been able to enjoy doing what they love over many decades. John Tatgenhorst loved creating music. John passed away at age 85 and died peacefully at home.
At an early age, John showed talent with his music abilities. Composing, arranging, having his own radio music show, and playing drums in his hometown of East Liverpool, Ohio, led him to his alma mater, Ohio State University. John received his music degree from OSU and continued to arrange music for the Ohio State University Marching Band for over 40 years. During this time, he arranged "Hang On Sloopy" for the marching band, which later became Ohio's official state rock song. After graduating, John taught music lessons privately, was the drum set player for Nick Clooney's local morning tv show, and wrote for many music publishing companies. His favorite compositions include one of his first - Tanglewood, and later Poem for Band. John has written over 600 pieces of music, which are still performed all over the world and can be seen on YouTube.
John moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1982 to expand his music company after successfully working in Columbus, Ohio. There he wrote music for various advertising agencies, companies, and orchestras. In addition to the Ohio State University Marching Band, John wrote for the Penn State Blue Band, Purdue's All-American Marching Band, and University of Washington Husky Band. He wrote an original orchestral piece for Doc Severinsen with the Columbus Symphony and arranged for performers at the pre-ceremonies at the Indy 500 race. John worked with notable artists such as Nancy Wilson, Ramsey Lewis, Ray Charles, CeCe Winans, Steven Tyler and director John Hughes. Many people worked in his home recording studio including Mike Ditka for TGIF Fridays, the Kenilworth Union Church Choir, and artists involved in various charitable projects. During this time, John won Emmy, Chris, Telly, and Gold Camera Awards for Music Composing and Arranging. His film scores include two videos for PBS on The White House, performed by the United States Marine Band. Another PBS show for which John wrote original music was narrated by Jason Robarts, a tv series "On the Waterways" that was well-received.
During his visits to Los Angeles, John worked for Shirley Walker and wrote cues for the animated series The Adventures of Batman and Robin. John Tatgenhorst enjoyed working with John Williams on various orchestral film scores for Warner Brothers Music. John was selected to arrange Christmas songs for Paul Freeman, conductor of the Chicago Sinfonietta, to record with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London for the album "Turned On Christmas" for Sony Records. John served on the board of the Chicago Grammys and the Ohio State University Alumni Board. He arranged music and was the conductor for the Chicago Film Critic's Awards Live show. John was a member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians, Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Actors Guild.
Unfortunately, John was plagued with ill health later in life, having three spinal cord surgeries, and in 2020 - heart surgery and a stroke. It was around this time his wife Lisa brought him to her hometown of Berlin, Wisconsin to enjoy life by taking it easy, listening to CD's, and watching movies.
John was born on August 22nd, 1938 in East Liverpool, Ohio, to Margaret Helen (Graham) and Donald Christopher Tatgenhorst. John graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1956, and went on to earn a music degree from the Ohio State University.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lisa (Spoehr) Tatgenhorst, and children Laura Tatgenhorst, Margo Tatgenhorst Drakos, and Michelle Weaver Kuecks. He is survived by his younger sister Judy Theis, of Xenia, Ohio. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Connie (Steve) Smits of Berlin, WI, and brother-in-law Paul (Linda) Spoehr of Madison, WI, with many nieces, and nephews, and grandchildren as well. John was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Donald, and son Timothy.
There will be a scholarship fund created to aid a student pursuing music in John's honor. John was a charismatic person full of stories to tell. He was so loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the music community.
To honor John's wishes, there will be a private funeral gathering with interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin. Arrangements have been entrusted to Barbola Funeral Chapel in Berlin. I was John´s first arranging teacher. Having gone to E. Liverpool H. S., I knew John. He was four years behind me; I graduated in 1952. After my first year in college (Ohio Wesleyan), I came home & got a call from John. He knew that I was a music major & he had questions about arranging for Band. I would sit with him explaining, as best I could, range of instruments, keys of the instruments etc. He wanted to know everything that I could tell him about arranging. I was a beginner & did the best I could to fill him in on the capabilities of the various instruments. The first song we worked on was: "Hernandos Hideaway"...I think from the musical: "Pajama Game".
I got to work with John several times over the years as we both went back to E. Liverpool for reunions...I conducted the alumni band & John had fun playing in the percussion section. I am so sorry to hear of his passing even though I knew there were health issues. God Bless Him & "Hang on Sloopy".

John was at 34-36 Chittenden across from the Law Library in 1956 and believe he was playing with the Al Wasline (sp) Band at the time. Recall him coming in around 2-3 am, brushing his teeth in our bathroom and singing songs he must played that evening. He did show me things on my guitar at the time and recall Momma Dion who ran the house taking care of him when he was sick. Left there in Fall Qtr of 1957 and only saw him again at the pre-game shows at St. John. What a life he had!!!

Just heard the sad news as expressed so eloquently by an alumnus of TBDBITL. I wouldn´t have wanted to hear it from anyone else quite frankly, because I know how much TBDBITL alumni appreciated and adored John. I have always gone to the liner notes and looked for John´s name and I always got a thrill to see the arrangement was by the great John Tagenhorst. His music and arrangements will live on for generations to come!

So very sorry to hear of John´s passing. I was just thirteen and was a neighbor of he and Sue. I babysat the kids; Timmy and Michelle. Changing her diapers and watching the local TV show where John played the drums. Timmy was so excited...saying "that´s Daddy!" Even though I was just a young teenager, he always spoke to me as an adult and I just loved that! AND he had the best music albums that I listened to all day. May he rest in peace and may your memories be a blessing. Kindly, Gail (Gonser) James

I knew John in a way that no one else has mentioned. I knew him mainly as the percussion instructor at Capital university in the mid-70s when I was a student there. I was a music education major, he was the instructor for percussion methods classes. I think all of us enjoyed having him for that class and I believe the percussion majors also learned much from him in their lessons. Ed Duling

Our prayers go out to the Tatgenhorst family. I was a student of John at Van's in Columbus Ohio until I graduated from high school in 1965. I joined the Marine Corp and was sent to Japan. I got lucky and ended up playing in the Marine Corp Drum and Bugle Corp Japan for over 2 years. It was because of all the preparation John walked us through that I was able to audition. I passed the audition and played snare drum for the remainder of my tour. John was my musical mentor I have always looked up to. I do have a memory of John and Gene Kruppa giving us a treat at a recital for his students. John was giving the set his all and he looked over to Kruppa who was mimicking him but with just one hand. John then let Gene tell his story. John was a wonderful man, motivator, instructor and someone many of us looked up to as the best in the business. You will be missed.

John was my uncle who gave me the courage and inspiration to play the drums and perform in various cover bands throughout my life. Words can not exspress the sadness that i feel right now. He will forever always be in my heart.

John Tatgenhorst was my drum set teacher in high school, then my marimba teacher as I prepared to attend Capital University. He was my mentor and instructor through my 4 years at Capital while I earned my Bachelor of Music Ed degree. He got me started in the music business and his drumming style and teaching were what molded me into the professional drummer/percussionist I am today, and I am eternally grateful to him for that. RIP to a mentor and friend.

RIP John. I dont go to OSU but I am a huge fan of TBDBITL. You made Hang On Sloopy as much a part of gameday as Script Ohio and Carmen Ohio. OH-IO.

My wife and John graduated in the same class in high school, and I played in the percussion section of the band with John. Several of us in the band were good friends and enjoyed meeting up again in the alumni band at East Liverpool reunions. John will be missed.

John was my first drum teacher at Van's Music in Columbus, and was also instrumental in starting me on the vibraphone. I cleaned his studio in exchange for lessons, and enjoyed his teaching style and humor. He made a real difference in my musical life, and I am very thankful for that, and he's left a wonderful musical legacy at OSU that will go on for years.

I had the pleasure of working with John on a number of projects including the musical packages for Columbus State Community College & the Ohio State Fair. I have some great memories related to those projects & was honored to be able to work with such a talented individual. David Patton, Columbus, OH

I will always remember the playing of a new Tatgenhorst arrangement for the OSUMB. Little did we know when we played Hang On Sloopy for the first time that we were participating in the birth of a Buckeye Tradition, It is an unreplacable memory for me,

My husband and I feel quite honored to have known John in his glory days at Ohio State. Not only did we work with him in conjunction with the OSUMB, but we helped him by copying music parts for him for other bands - at his home. When Matt got a job as junior high band director in East Liverpool, we met his mother at the polling place on election day! See you in the Horseshoe in the sky someday! I was in the ohio state marching band 1980 to 82. I had learned to play the horn at ohio state in order to try out for the band , switching from percussion. I Was much less experienced at reading music than many of my fellow band members, who have been doing this since they were in elementary school. Struggled every week to memorize our music and was always relieved when I saw this man's name at the top of the page. His arrangements were always straightforward, yet beautiful and such a joy to play. My condolences to his family and friends at this time.

John was bigger than life in the eyes of many of us. He loved visitors, especially OSUMB alumni and especially 'current' members of the band. I think he secretly wished his college days at OSU had never ended... as he would light up when current members were in his midst at his home or when he was back on campus... he loved any and all stories. We all will meet again in the Heavenly Horseshoe and Stadium Band Room. John will be on snare and ready for the cadence to start rehearsal! O-H! John Tatgenhorst

I knew John at OSU in the 70´s and we stayed great friends! I loved spending time with him at Buckeye Football Games and talking about The Ohio Valley. He will be greatly missed and was a great talent. Deepest sympathy to Lisa and family.

I got to meet John when I was an OSU band-obsessed middle schooler in Columbus. My best friend´s dad was in advertising and worked with John. Once when he had John over, my friend and I "entertained" him with a tuba and snare drum rendition of Sloopy. John was charming and gracious, and later gifted each of us a signed set of band parts for Sloopy.
