John Edward Thomas, a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on November 26, 1966, in Mobile, AL, and spent his formative years in
Ocean Springs, Mississippi. John's life was one of service, dedication, and heartfelt connections, characterized by an enduring love for his family and country.
John was the youngest child of James E. and Elsie L. Thomas Sr. who instilled in him the values of hard work and pride in his country. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and a great nephew, Brian Pomelow. John's departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of his siblings; Lois (Rudy Sr.) Portales, Pam (David Sr.) Kubczak, James Jr. (Klaudia) Thomas, and Kathye (Mike) Beaugez. Additionally, he is survived by six nephews- Rudy Jr., Joshua, Dave Jr., Brandon, Michael, and William. Four nieces- Angela, Sondra, Sophia, and Amanda. In addition to his siblings and their families, John is also survived by many great-nephews, great-nieces, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins as well as a long-time cherished friend, Lynnda Johnson.
Growing up in Ocean Springs, John graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 1985, where he proudly participated in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corp (JROTC) program. After graduation, he served in the United States Army for eight years, from 1985 to 1992, as a member of the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division. His service included participation in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, experiences that shaped his character and deepened his commitment to his country.
After leaving the Army with Honorable Discharge, John pursued a career in nursing, earning his diploma from the MGCCC LPN program. He loved has work as a licensed Practical Nurse, dedicating himself to caring for others. His career took him to various places, including Ocean Springs, Florida, Boston, Massachusetts, and most recently, Alaska. However, it was his time working in the Neuro ICU in Nashville, TN, that brought him the most happiness and allowed him to create lasting friendships. His compassion and dedication to his patients were evident in every aspect of his work.
In addition to his exemplary service and career, John was a man of many interests. He developed a love for crafting early in life, experimenting with various mediums from crochet, sewing, and quilting. This creative spirit shone brightly through the homemade gifts he lovingly shared with his family and friends, leaving them with cherished memories and tokens of his affections.
John Edward Thomas will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, his dedication to caring for others, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. As we say goodbye to John, let us celebrate a life filled with love, service, and creativity. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life for John Thomas will be held at Southern Mississippi Funeral Services Chapel on March 27, 2025 from 11:30am- 12:30pm. Interment will be held at the Biloxi National Cemetery at 1:30pm with US Army Honors.
