John Wood Vaught Jr, 74, of Moore, OK passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK after a short illness with his wife by his side. He was born on Friday, February 28, 1947, in Oklahoma City, to John and Earlene "Winnie" Vaught.
John spent his childhood weekends at his grandparent's house in Choctaw, OK hanging out with his cousins Joan and Sandra. He told many stories about the adults playing Dominoes as the kids ran around doing what kids did then.
John was very athletic playing football, basketball, and baseball during his youth and teenage years. He grew up in Del City, OK. Living down the street from his school, his home was the neighborhood hangout. Before his sophomore year of high school his family moved to Moore, OK. His mom would say he was so mad about moving, he would proudly strut down the hallways at Moore High School sporting his Kerr letter jacket. As his story continued we learned how quick he adapted. John was not only crowned the football homecoming king his senior year but also earned quite the reputation as the 'legend of Moore'. John graduated from Moore High School in 1965 and went on to attend Oklahoma State University.
John had various jobs working for Tinker and Dolese until making a career with the local cement masons. He perfected this craft and started his own business, John Vaught Construction Co, in 1981. He operated his business subcontracting through Apollo Building Systems until his death.
John spent many years coaching the Thrillers youth girls softball team winning several state tournaments and competing in several national championships.
John was fun loving, tender hearted, and possessed a unique wit. He was a devoted family man. One could never question the love he had for his family. When he was not in attendance at his grandkids sporting events and school programs, he enjoyed his time at the lake; boating, fishing, and riding four wheelers. He also loved taking his family to the Dusk 'Til Dawn Blues Festival in Rentiesville OK, OSU bowl games, and vacationing in Branson, MO. He developed a special recipe for his fried catfish, tartar sauce, grilled stuff jalapeno peppers and award-winning salsa. He was known for his full head of grey hair, handlebar mustache, and wearing shorts year round. John is survived by his wife Debbie Vaught; his daughters, Jennifer Mahan, Wendy Vaught, and Shauna Vaught; his grandchildren, Mason Vaught and wife Katharine, Tyauna Vaught, and Karter Vaught; his great grandchildren, Everly Johnston and Dawson Vaught; his brother Wayne Vaught and wife Cindy; his aunt Shirley McConell; his mother in law, Mary "GG" Durant; brother in law, Mitchell Durant; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Dalton Nichols.
