John A. Vigilante
John A. Vigilante, affectionately known as "Abuelo," passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 94, on March 15, 2025, in Norwalk, CT. Born on March 2, 1931, in New York, NY, John lived a vibrant and full life, dedicated to family, education, service, and adventure.
John married the love of his life, Catherine, on July 31, 1954. They shared a devoted partnership until her passing. He is survived by his children, John (Suzan) and Catherine (Michelle); grandchildren, Marisa (Jordan), John IV (Kayla), and Maren (Richard); and great-grandchildren, Emmett, Walker, Marchessa, Chloe, Hudson, and Sylvie.
John earned his BA degree from Iona College before proudly serving as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Guam, for two years. Following his military service, he pursued a career in education, teaching history at Ponus Ridge, while attending law school at night. Upon earning his Juris Doctor degree, he established a successful private law practice before retiring to teach law at Norwalk Community College, where he founded a respected paralegal program.
An adventurous spirit, John spent much of his retirement traveling and residing part-time in his beloved apartment on Spain's Costa Del Sol together with his wife. He enthusiastically managed various business ventures abroad, reflecting his entrepreneurial and outgoing nature. John possessed a remarkable gift for making connections, easily uncovering the "life stories" of complete strangers who soon became friends.
John was deeply involved in his community, actively participating in the Order Sons of Italy in America as national membership chairman, serving St. Matthew's Catholic Church, and contributing many years of service to the Lions Club.
Abuelo will be remembered fondly for his warmth, charisma, and his genuine interest in the lives of others. His legacy of love, curiosity, and dedication continues to inspire his family and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 20, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 21, at 10:00 AM at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT.
