Dr. John F. "Jack" Ward
A devout Roman Catholic, passed away peacefully on Thursday February 17, 2022, at the age of 94 at Vincentian Home. He was born in Pittsburgh on January 9, 1928. Jack was the son of the late Sarah and William G. Ward. He was predeceased in death by his brother, William G. Ward, Jr., a newborn brother, Joseph Ward, and his sisters, Mary Ward Pantalone and Bernice M. Ward. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Jack served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class, which afforded him the opportunity to attend the University of Pittsburgh where he received his B.S. and Medical degree. Subsequently, he went to San Francisco's St. Francis Hospital, where he did his pathology internship and then his residency. However, Jack's love for family and his native Pittsburgh beckoned him home, where he spent most of his career at Mercy Hospital as a Pathologist.
Jack, along with several other physicians, launched a medical laboratory that was located in the Southside of Pittsburgh. Due to the success of their company and the recognition that it had in the industry, it was eventually purchased by Corning, Inc. Jack then turned his time and his philanthropy towards his passion for Catholic education and giving back to society. He became very involved in the beginning stages and the subsequent development of both Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia, where he was a founding Director, and Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh. Jack's generous support of those institutions continues to enable them to provide scholarship aid for countless students and their families.
In addition to Jack's professional career and community involvement, he enjoyed reading, golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, ballroom dancing and playing the piano.
During Jack's final weeks, when asked about his life, he replied modestly that "It's better to give than receive". Throughout his life, he remained true to his simple, humble roots.
