Johnnie Melvin Vickers, affectionately known as "JV" and "Pops," passed away peacefully at home on December 27, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on September 13, 1933, in
Coushatta, Louisiana, to Henry Vickers Sr. and Ella Wilson, Johnnie's life was rooted in faith from an early age. He was baptized at St. John Baptist Church, where his lifelong walk with God began.
Johnnie excelled academically and athletically while attending school in Red River Parish, graduating from Springville High School in 1952. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1961, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, and later attended Southern University.
On July 1, 1953, Johnnie married the love of his life, Betty Lou Sibley. Together they shared 72 years of marriage, building a home grounded in love, faith, and devotion, and raising three children: Cassandra, Johnny, and Marcus Vickers.
A dedicated provider and servant leader, Johnnie devoted much of his life to mentoring youth through athletics. As a Little League, Babe Ruth, and Joe DiMaggio League coach in Ravenswood, he led teams to District, Central California, and State championships, as well as a Western Regional Tournament appearance. Beyond wins and titles, he instilled discipline, teamwork, confidence, and character in generations of young athletes.
Johnnie's professional life reflected the same integrity and work ethic. He worked in Research and Development at Stanford Research Institute, owned and operated a Gulf Service Station, served the Ravenswood School District, and later spent six years as Maintenance Manager at Varian Electronics.
A devoted man of faith, Johnnie served as a Deacon at Christian Assembly in Gonzales, Louisiana, and later at New Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Los Banos, California. He enjoyed fishing, landscaping, cooking, and teaching his grandchildren life lessons-often by the water. A loyal Raiders and Golden State Warriors fan, he cherished time with family above all else.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Vickers Sr. and Ella Vickers, and his brothers, Henry Vickers Jr. and Arthur Vickers.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 72 years, Betty Vickers; his sister, June Hart of Menlo Park; sister-in-law, Evelyn Vickers of Madera; his children Cassandra Jones (Dwayne) of Los Banos, Johnny Vickers of San Jose, and Marcus Vickers (Jamea) of Stockton; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
Johnnie Melvin Vickers will be remembered for his strength, kindness, unwavering faith, and deep devotion to family and community.
