John Arsement passed away peacefully in the home of his daughter after short battle with lung cancer. He was 75.
John was born October 4, 1947 to Joe and Pauline Shipp in Fort Worth, Texas where he spent his early childhood with his younger sisters Paula and Patricia. They were later adopted together by Leo Anthony and Gladys Howell Arsement of Huntsville, Alabama.
He spent time as a teen in the Presbyterian Home for Children and remembers his time there fondly. After graduating from Talladega High School in 1965, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served on the USS Independence as a Radio Operator. He served 3 years active duty and 3 years reserve.
After departing from military service, in 1968 he began working in law enforcement serving in both Huntsville and Scottsboro, Alabama. He then moved to Chesapeake, Virginia where he proudly began a life and prestigious career on the Chesapeake Police Department. After more than 30 years, he retired as a first Sergeant.
He was predeceased by his parents Leo and Gladys Arsement, sister Paulette Arsement Tubb, son Scott Thorne, and granddaughter Abigail Grace Cushman.
Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 45 years Jean Rackley Arsement and his children John Arsement (Melissa) of Virginia Beach, VA, Andrea Cushman (Jeff) of High Point, NC, Stephen Arsement (Megan) of Monrovia, MD, and Brenda Rowland (Felix) of Virginia Beach, VA. He was also blessed to have children joined by marriage and love; Debbie Thorne of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Mark Thorne (Kim) of Atlanta, GA, Sisters Patricia Myers (David), and Linda Sue Arsement Berry, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins whom he dearly loved.
He was a proud Papa to Matthew Joyner, Hannah Cushman, Josh Joyner, Alex Madden, Madison Thorne, Emily Cushman, Jessie Arsement, Riley Rowland, Sarah Cushman, Savannah Thorne, Avery Rowland, Ila Thorne, and Braden Arsement.
John was a diehard Alabama Fan, an avid poker player, and an all around funny guy. He loved to laugh and genuinely enjoyed people. He lived his life with truth, honesty, and unfailing integrity. John was a man of faith and attended Kempsville Presbyterian Church in recently, and Great Bridge Baptist church for many years. He was a huge lover of animals. He kept a special place in his heart for through the years for his beloved dachshund Dudley, Cockatiel Dallas, and his sweet cat Sergio.
John was unfailingly kind and warm to anyone he met. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
