Johnny Earl Holmes, Sr. was born on May 16,1952 to I. L. and Velma Smith Holmes in Somerville, Tennessee. Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved parents, as well as his siblings, Joyce Roach, James Holmes, Henry Holmes and Lorene George.

Johnny accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Somerville, TN. He was educated in the Fayette County Public School System. He and his wife joined with First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill in 1989 where he was a devoted member and Trustee, until his passing. Johnny was meticulous in the care he took of the church buildings and property. He was very often the first person you met upon entering the building, rain or shine. He would dutifully greet and assist members and visitors exiting their vehicles and ensure they got into the building safely. Johnny took our security seriously as he would often say, “don’t make me bend my elbow!”

He had a love for driving. Johnny started driving cross country for Roadway Express. Later, he drove for Gulf Oil Company, followed by the US Postal Service. Johnny was the President of the Local Postal Workers Union, Treasurer of the Nashville Chapter of African American Postal League United for Success (A-Plus) and Board Member of the Nashville Post Office Credit Union.

Johnny loved tennis, either participating or watching. He also loved to travel. He was a family man who loved spending time with close and extended family.

Johnny leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 45 years, Renita White Holmes; three children: Janda (Adolphus) Brown, Johnny, Jr. and Jessica; three grandchildren: Mackenzie Holmes, Jamia Butler and Adolphus Josiah Brown; siblings: Clarice Williamson, Joan Carter, Ined (Beatrice) Holmes, Regina (John) Jamerson, Donnie (Sherion) Holmes, Floyd Holmes and Wendell (Bonnie) Holmes. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Johnny was simply loved by many.
