Jonathan Hayes Metcalfe

Jonathan Hayes Metcalfe, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 02, 2024, at the age of 45, after a courageous six-month battle with brain cancer. Jon leaves behind a legacy of faith, selflessness, and unwavering love for his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

Jon is survived by his eternal companion, Jin, who stood faithfully by his side throughout this journey, and their five treasured children: Kiaora, Tainui, Mailea, Kailani, and Marika, who were his greatest joy. He is also survived by his loving parents, Wayne and Kathy Metcalfe; his brothers Justin (Staci), Brandon (Maren), David (Kiersten), Christopher (Cassie), Jeffery (Bridgette), Daniel (Brikell), and Stephen (Racheal); his sisters Micah (Christopher) and Madison; and dozens of nieces, nephews, and extended family members. 

Jon was a devoted priesthood holder who exemplified quiet strength and service. He was always seeking ways to lift others, often asking visitors, even in his final days, "What can I do for you?" His Christlike compassion touched countless lives and served as a beacon of light and hope for all who knew him. 

Born on October 11, 1979, Jon was the fourth child in a large and loving family. From a young age, he looked up to his older brothers and admired his father, Wayne, striving to emulate their examples in every way. Despite his humility and quiet demeanor, Jon’s love and loyalty to his family and friends were undeniable. 

Jon served an honorable mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Korea, where he developed a profound love for the people and culture. That love continued after his mission and led him to meet his eternal companion, Jin, during an internship in Korea. Jin’s courage and faith inspired her to follow Jon to the United States, where they were sealed for time and eternity in the temple. Together, they built a beautiful family, creating a home filled with laughter, faith, and unconditional love. 

Jon’s love for family extended beyond his own. In his early 20s, he became a mentor and guide to Soo Yong and Soo Rin, two children from Korea who came to live with the Metcalfe family. Jon’s care for them mirrored that of a parent, forging a bond that remains strong to this day.

Jon was deeply connected to his New Zealand heritage, sharing a passion for All Blacks rugby with his children and traveling halfway across the world to see them play. He also cherished family traditions, particularly the elaborate Korean BBQ feasts he and Jin would prepare, ensuring everyone felt loved and well-fed. 

In his final days, Jon shared advice that will guide his family for generations: Stay close to your family and be a strength to one another. Love the gospel and follow Jesus Christ.

His unwavering testimony of the Plan of Salvation brought peace and comfort to those around him. Jon faced his diagnosis with grace and courage, never wavering in his faith or love for others. Even in his final moments, he found strength to share humor and express gratitude to family, friends, and caregivers. 

Jon’s life was marked by selflessness. Whether comforting a struggling sibling, helping a friend in need, or ensuring everyone around him felt valued, he lived a life of service. His impact will forever be remembered by those he uplifted, protected, and loved so deeply. 

Jon is preceded in death by family members who now welcome him home. His family finds comfort in the gospel’s promises and in the knowledge that families are eternal.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the Foxhill Ward, 200 South Eagle Ridge Drive, North Salt Lake, Utah. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah, and Friday morning from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment- Memorial Lakeview Cemetery.

Services will be streamed live on the Russon Mortuary Live Facebook page and on this obituary page. The live stream will begin about 10-15 minutes prior to the service and will be posted below.
