Joni Lee Ferguson

Joni Lee Ferguson 53, of Indianapolis, passed away January 7, 2010. She is survived by her mother, Jane Byus; father, Marvin Ferguson (Bronwen); daughter, Erika Jane Scheck (Jeffrey); two grandchildren, Alyssa Jane and John Steven; sisters, Kathleen Ferguson, Karen Ferguson, and Valerie Stewart (Sam); and brother, Jay Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elmer and Grace Ferguson and Warren and Lois Mitchell. Joni was a 1976 graduate of the University of Indianapolis where she studied nursing. Throughout her career, she was an obstetrical nurse at University Heights Hospital, IU Medical Center and Witham Hospital. She also worked as a skilled care nurse at several long term care facilities in Indianapolis. As a child, Joni was an avid competitive swimmer. As an adult, she continued her love of the water by becoming a certified scuba diver, making many trips to the Caribbean islands. She loved animals and cared for many dogs and cats throughout her life. She was a loving daughter, a dedicated mother, a loyal friend, and a devoted grandmother to her two grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday, January 12 at 11 a.m. at the Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park East with calling at the same location on Monday, January 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Humane Society.
