Jose Manuel Picon, age 58, died peacefully on April 3rd at his home in Cartersville, GA after a long battle with lung cancer. He is remembered for his patriotic attitude, bravery, and love for his family.
Mr. Picon is survived by his wife, Monique Picon and his two children: Rees Picon and Leanna Proctor. He also leaves behind siblings Meliton Picon, Juanita Garcia, Anita Johnson, Ben Picon (Darlene Picon), and Jose Luis Picon along with several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
1SG Jose M. Picon was born March 6, 1965 in Los Angeles California to Isabel and the late Manuel Picon.
He is a graduate of Calexico High School. After graduating high school, Mr. Picon joined the US Army. He served many years in the 82nd Airborne stationed at Fort Bragg, NC before moving to GA and joining the Gordon County Sheriff's Office. Following 9/11, Joe rejoined the military in the 1-108th stationed in Calhoun, GA. He deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2006, he was assigned to the Army/National Guard Georgia Counterdrug Task Force that assisted local drug task force operations. He specifically worked with Rome/Floyd Metro until his retirement from the military in 2016. Following his retirement, he joined the Rome City Police Dept in 2017 until he medically resigned in 2019.
He was dedicated to his faith, family, and services in the military and law enforcement. His patriotic attitude was contagious and was overshadowed only by his selflessness. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest. Joe was a real-life hero and a true American Patriot.
Services will be held this Friday from 4pm to 8pm at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and will be followed by interment services at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project.
