Joseph Eugene Branham "Gene", "Joe"
Joseph Eugene Branham, born on July 16, 1942, to Anita and Elmond Branham, passed away peacefully at his daughter's (Pam) home on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. His father, Elmond, did not get to meet his son as he was killed when his merchant ship, the Ogontz, was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico by a German U-Boat on May 19th of that same year.
"Gene," as he was called in his early years, was raised in the French Quarter, he attended St. Louis Cathedral School and graduated from De La Salle High School. He met and married Madaleen Grimaldi, and fathered 2 girls, Pamela Ann and Kimberly Denise.
Mr. Branham joined the N.O.P.D. in 1964 and enjoyed a 30+ year storied career, during which he received the Bachelor of Criminal Justice from Loyola University and graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy at Quantico. Reaching the rank of Lieutenant "Joe" had extended assignments as shift Commander of the 2nd district, Commander of the Narcotics division, and the Commander of the N.O.P.D. Police Academy.
After retiring from the N.O.P.D. Mr. Branham joined the D.E.A. as an Intelligence Research Analyst and retired from that position as well, enjoying his true retirement with friends and family.
Mr. Branham was pre-deceased by his parents, Elmond R. Branham and Anita B. Nilsson, his stepfather William Nilsson, his sister Patricia Branham, and his grandson Taylor Hovis. He is survived by his daughters Pamela B. Anderson (Bill) and Kimberly B. Daigle, and his grandsons Ronald Cantrelle III (Rebecca) and Nathan Hovis (Sara). He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren, another on the way and 1 great-great-grandchild, another on the way.
The family would like to thank with special appreciation Sage Lake, A.C.G. Hospice, and Jennifer Valley, R.N. for their comforting services.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd, 70124, on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
