Joseph Burt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes - Lansing Chapel on Jan. 14, 2026.
Joseph M. Burt, affectionately known as Joe to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, in his hometown of Lansing, Michigan, where he was born on July 24, 1953. Joe's life was marked by his dedication to healing and understanding the human mind, traits that made him a cherished figure in both his personal and professional circles.
Joe's journey of education and service began at the University of Michigan, where he pursued an undergraduate degree that laid the foundation for his medical career. His commitment to medicine took him to Michigan State University, where he earned his M.D., and his passion for psychiatry was further honed during a prestigious residency at Duke University. It was during this time at MSU that Joe's calm, compassionate, and caring nature earned him the admiration of his peers and mentors, including Dr. Timothey Fior, who regarded him as an inspiring role model.
After his education, Joe established a private practice in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he continued to touch the lives of many. His expertise in psychiatry was only one facet of his multifaceted personality; Joe was also known for his love of wrestling, international travel, and football. His brother Terry fondly recalls teaching Joe how to run a post pattern, marveling at his skill despite his stature. His love for music was evident when he played guitar alongside his sister Mary, with the pair performing a beautiful rendition of "Stairway to Heaven."
Joe's siblings remember him as a fun-loving and creative individual, whose sensitive nature allowed him to care deeply about helping people heal. This sensitivity was also present in simple, cherished family moments, like the time his mother had to use matchsticks for his birthday cake at Lake Missaukee, a memory that brings a smile to all who were there. Lisa, Joe's sister, shares a special memory of when they were little, any time she was around Joe, she felt a sense of peace and warmth.
Joe's legacy of caring and intelligence is carried on by his surviving siblings: Thomas C. Burt (Karyn), Terence M. Burt (Patricia), Paula K. (Dennis Harney) Burt, Lisa M. Burt, and Mary T. Burt. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Catherine (Finlan) Burt, and his brother Michael.
Joe Burt's life was a testament to the power of kindness, intelligence, and passion. His legacy as a healer, a mentor, and a role model will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but the impact he made on the world will endure through the countless lives he touched with his compassionate spirit.
A memorial celebration will be announced at a later time. Donations may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Hazelton Betty Ford Foundation of Greater Chicago.

My dear friend Joe, we shared so many adventures together, so fortunate and so blessed! Our trips to Florida, Paris, Hawaii! Golfing in Myrtle Beach! Meeting & marrying Charly, your soulmate and angel. May brightness shine on you. It was such a tough road, now rest in peace. Sending warm embraces to Terry, Tom, Paula, Lisa, and Mary, with eternal love for your family.
