Joseph Chandler Cahoon Sr.

Joseph "Joe" Chandler Cahoon of York Alabama peacefully passed away on
Wednesday, December 10, 2025. A family graveside service with military
honors will be held on Thursday, December 18 at 1:30 PM in the Georgia
National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
Joe was born in York, AL, on November 6, 1933. He graduated from Sumter
County High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball as
well as was active at First Baptist Church of York. He played baseball and
basketball at Livingston University. He joined the Air Force where he served in
Japan for 18 months toward the end of the Korean Conflict as a Radar, Airfield
and Weather Systems Specialist.
Joe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and
spent his entire career in the pulp and paper industry specializing in Human
Resources and union negotiation. He retired from Tennessee River Pulp and
Paper (a PCA company) in January of 1996. He loved spending time with his
three grandchildren who called him "Pop". He turned his GMC Jimmy (the
Jimmy John) into a world of wonder and exploration without it ever leaving the
garage. Joe was an avid golfer shooting below his age into his 80's. He also
had three documented hole-in-ones. He was a loyal and engaged fan of
University of Alabama sports. He spent many hours hunting and fishing with
his father growing up in Sumter County. He and his wife were members of the
First Baptist Church of Trussville, Alabama.
He is preceded by his parents, James Mapp Cahoon and Effie Chandler
Cahoon, his brother, James Mapp Cahoon Jr and sister Kathleen Cahoon
Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Sharon Mundy Cahoon;
daughter, Donna Cahoon Beauford (Rick) of Marietta, GA; son, Joseph
Chandler Cahoon Jr. (Terri) of Vestavia Hills; grandchildren Chandler Cahoon
Cotton (Zach) of Birmingham; Taylor Cahoon Stewart (Ben) of Birmingham;
and Merritt Lee Cahoon of Durham, NC.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by the amazing
caregivers at Longleaf Assisted Living Birmingham, Brickmont Assisted Living
West Cobb Marietta and Agape Hospice Care Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests memorial contributions to a local Hospice organization.
