Joseph F. DePeter

Joseph F. DePeter, 91, passed away on May 25, 2025, after a period of declining health. Joe (Pete) was born on August 16, 1933, in Portland, Maine, one of seven children of Teresa (Tucci) and Joseph DePeter.
He is survived and will be missed by his son, Thomas R. DePeter, daughter-in-law, Renee Roy-DePeter and his two granddaughters, Marie DePeter and Emilia DePeter. He will be remembered by his sisters, Josephine Mayberry, Esther Fenlason, and Deborah F. Mahoney, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Along with his parents, Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph F. DePeter, Jr., his beloved partner of over 30 years, Nancy Mathieu, as well as his sisters, Mary Davis, Antonette Knox, and Gloria Hammond.
Joe grew up in the Munjoy Hill neighborhood and attended Portland schools. After serving four years in the United States Air Force, he attended and graduated from Franklin Institute in Boston. He spent most of his years employed by Bancroft & Martin as a structural engineer and later became a member and leader of its sales team. After retirement, Joe enjoyed working for Hertz driving rental vehicles back and forth from Portland and Boston.
Joe loved to travel and made many beautiful memories, along with Nancy, during their many travel adventures. He was a lover of music and enjoyed playing the organ and the accordion for many years. Joe and his dad shared the love of flying small aircraft, and he was especially proud of the fact that he received his pilot's license before he was licensed to drive an automobile. Joe was exceptionally proud of his sons and loved doting on and spending time with his granddaughters. He will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, loving, and generous man by all who knew and loved him.
When asked what impact Joe had, his granddaughter Emi, said, "he liked quality time, community, and trying new things. He was always giving back with a gentle spirit".
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the exceptional staff at Gosnell Hospice Center in Scarborough and would be grateful for any donations, in lieu of flowers, made (on Joe's behalf) to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough Maine.

A celebration of life will be held at Hope Memorial Chapel on Saturday, June 28th from 11AM to 1PM.
