Joseph P. Doran, 87, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at his home in Toledo surrounded by his family. He was born September 5, 1936, in Toledo, OH to George and Frances (Sexton) Doran. He attended DeVilbiss High School and was a Life Support Technician in the 180th Fighter Wing. He married Lois Winkelman on June 2, 1956, and they have five children.
Joe served four years in the US Air Force and 38 years in the Ohio Air National Guard. He loved his career, and if not for mandatory retirement at age 55, he would've still been working for the 180th Fighter Wing. At the 180th FW, he volunteered as a firefighter, where he responded to a couple of aircraft crashes. He served on the 180th Color Guard Team and "posted the Colors" at parades and ceremonies. Joe also enjoyed playing for the base softball team. He absolutely loved "the Stingers." Throughout his life, family was most important, and in retirement, he was extremely active in all the grandkids' activities and sporting events. Joe volunteered to work at the Stranahan Theater for 15 years, and in his spare time, he hung out with his buddies at the bowling allies and trophy shops and visited his friends in the 180th FW "Afterburners" retirement group.
Through Joe's example, he instilled in his family a sense of patriotism and service to his fellow man; his children Kim and Lisa worked in the healthcare industry, Rick and Sharyl are with the Toledo Fire Department (TFD), (Sharyl is a Fire Chief), and Joe Jr., served in the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserves, and is in the FBI. Joe's son-in-law, Mark, is in the Air National Guard. Joe's grandchildren serve or served the public as well; Ryan served in the U.S. Marine Corps; Allyson is in the US Air Force; Libby and Josh are in the Air National Guard and Josh is with the TFD; Asia and Lexy served in the Air National Guard and in healthcare industry; and Lindsy and Gracie work in healthcare. Finally, Joe's great-grandson, Seth, is serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and Gracie and Rylee are in the healthcare industry.
Joe is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lois; children, Kim (Larry), Rick, Lisa (Bob), Joe (Dominique) and Sharyl (Mark); grandchildren, Shane (Tracie), Sherry, Ryan, Lindsy (Lee), RJ (Ellen), Cody (Tenley), Shelby, Allyson (Andrew), Libby, Lexy (Rob), Asia, Jake and Josh; great-grandchildren, Dalanie, Gracie, Isaac, Seth, Rylee, Lena, Gia, Reece, Brynlee, Hudson, Owen, Carson, Chase, Caroline, Samuel, Sophia, Bella, Bentley, McKenna, and Ryker; two great great-grandchildren, Sophie, and Serenity. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, George, Ray, Jim, Jerry, Dick, Eleanor, Hank and Mick.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 W. Sylvania, from 12:00pm to 2:30pm, where a memorial service will begin at 2:30pm. Air Force Full Honor Guard will provide military honors at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boulder Crest Foundation in Joe's name. Boulder Crest helps veterans with PTSD (https://support.bouldercrest.org/BCFOneTime).

So very sad to hear of Joes passing.
I was a pilot at the 180th for 25 years and Joe was a big part of my experience from day 1. He was well loved by all and I will miss him. I regret that I will be out of town on June 1, but I will be thinking of Joe and his wonderful family.
