Joseph Paul Gehousky, of Sewell, NJ, passed away on July 19th, 2024, at the age of 83.
Born to the late Joseph and Lillian (nee Coulson) on November 4, 1940 at home in Cherry Hill, NJ. Joe is the beloved brother of Nancy (Glen, 2012) Geiske, and Maryann (Harry, 2006) Hoffman. Growing up, Joe attended Merchantville High School where he played the accordion and bagged groceries at the corner supermarket. He also parked cars for his parents friends when they came to hang out at their home's basement bar At the age of nineteen, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy where he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During his service in Hawaii, Joe met the love of his life, Navy WAVE, the late Beverly (nee Prybylski). To Joe, it was love at first sight. In 1962, Joe and Beverly were united in marriage in Hawaii. Once Joe and Beverly were discharged, they moved from Washington DC to the Maple Shade area and decided to start a family. They welcomed two daughters, Susan (Robert) Conboy and Diane (Michael, 2019) Hughes. Joe initially worked at the Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia with his father, as a draftsman. He then began working at Catalytic as a draftsman and was promoted to engineer. He attended Rutgers College at night and earned his BS degree. As his company changed hands from United Engineers and Constructers, then Raytheon, he retired as a Project Manager. As a family, they often took trips to Ocean City NJ, Lake Ontario, Puerto Rico and other exciting places.
Joe's world became brighter when he became the grandfather of Joseph (Shana), Robert (Eric), Jeffery, Caitlyn, Christian, Michael, and Jenna, as well as the great-grandfather of Brooke and Brad. Joe loved spending as much time with his family as he could. As his daughters grew up, Joe survived teaching both of his daughters to drive, and attended every softball game he could. He kept this tradition with his grandchildren, supporting them from the bleachers of a sporting field to the theater seats of a ballet recital. Joe and Beverly spent a loving 50 years together before Beverly passed away in 2012 after her battle with Leiomyosarcoma.
While Joe was a family man, he also had many other hobbies that shaped him to the man that we know and love. Joe enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, fishing, and gardening. Joe loved spending time outdoors, he felt the best with the sun on his skin or the wind in his hair. Joe was a member of the Pitman Golf Club, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and a Eucharistic Minister at The Church of Incarnation. He served as Grand Knight, or "Papa Joe" as the members refer to him as, of The Knights of Columbus. Joe's selflessness knew no bounds as he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it. Joe's phone number was the first on the list of many who needed help fixing anything at all.
Joe will be remembered by those who loved him for his kind, loving, personality, and his generous heart.
