We are saddened to inform you that Joseph Martin Gutowski, 90, entered eternal life Wednesday, February 21, 2024.
Joseph was born to Roman and Viola (Gaydos) Gutowski and raised in Perth Amboy, NJ. He graduated from Perth Amboy High School class of 1953, where he played football. He continued his football career on scholarship at Pacific University graduating class of 1958 with a BS in science. After graduation he joined the coaching Staff at the newly opened Edison High School as the offensive backfield coach. When J.P. Stevens High School opened in 1964, Coach Gutowski became the first head coach where he stayed until retiring from coaching in 1982. His greatest passion was coaching, and traveling with his family and friends. Everyone knew he was always only a phone call away when needed. His generosity and deep connection to his family & players truly blessed and fulfilled him in life.
Joseph was predeceased by his beloved daughter Melissa Gutowski, his brother Martin Gutowski and sisters Margaret Tozzi and Dolores Hall. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Betty (Hoagland) Gutowski. His devoted and loving daughter Elizabeth Croes, her husband Chris, his two granddaughters whom he adored - Emily and Molly, and numerous nieces and nephews. Too many esteemed players to name but they were truly part of his family as well. 120-53-5. Rest easy Coach.
A memorial visitation will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 12:00noon - 3:00pm at the Flynn and Son / Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave., Metuchen, NJ. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00pm.
