Obituary of Joseph W. Licata
Joseph W. Licata, a dedicated family man, veteran, and community servant, passed away peacefully at his home in Tewksbury on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. He was 87 years old.
Joseph was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Maplewood. He spent a significant part of his life in Union, where he raised his beloved family before moving to various locations, including Warren, Bedminster, and Marco Island, finally settling in Tewksbury.
A proud Army veteran, Joseph served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict from 1954 to 1957. As a paratrooper, he was stationed in both North Carolina and Germany, showcasing his bravery and commitment to his nation.
Joseph's work ethic was unparalleled. He devoted 25 years to the Union Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Captain at a very young age. His dedication extended beyond his firefighting career; he founded Fleet Service Inc., a truck repair company that continues to thrive under the leadership of his son, Christopher. For the past 40 years, Joseph also ran Classic Country Homes as a general contractor, demonstrating his versatility and tireless spirit.
Despite his demanding career, Joseph found joy in simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors, tending to his garden, and working on landscaping projects. A true car enthusiast, Joseph had a passion for sports cars, particularly Mustangs and Corvettes. His true loves were his animals; his horses and many dogs.
Family was at the heart of Joseph's life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary, his children, Linda McMurray, Christopher Licata and his wife Michele, and Steven. Joseph was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Brooke, Evan (Nick), Skylar, Reed (Nick), Erica (Dan), and Kirk (Kelly); and a loving great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren: Layla, Aria, Nicholas, Lucas, Logan, Sienna, Luca, and Roman. He is also survived by his dear sister, Leona.
Joseph was predeceased by his stepson, Jeffrey Wolfman, in 2018 and his son-in-law, Hugh McMurray.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a viewing on Monday, July 8, 2024, from 4 pm to 8 pm at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ 07069. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 11 am at Our Lady of the Mount RC Chapel in Warren. Cremation services will be private.
Joseph W. Licata will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to his country and community, and his passion for life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
