Joseph Lunghamer Obituary

Joe Lunghamer (Sr), died peacefully on July 2nd surrounded by his wife and children at his home in Birmingham, Michigan.
Joe played ice hockey growing up in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada and made the Canadian Junior team. He left home when he was 15 years old to play hockey at a high level all over western Canada. He accepted a hockey scholarship to the University of Michigan where he studied architecture. While at Michigan, Joe met and married the love of his life Amanda Matthews. He graduated in 1963. His hockey accomplishments included a Big Ten Championship and induction into the Michigan hockey Dekers hall of fame. Joe expressed many times that without the University of Michigan he would not be where he is today so he endowed the Joe Lunghamer Michigan Hockey Scholarship for future players.
Joe had a successful career in the automobile industry as a Chevrolet dealer. He began his career as an architect for General Motors before joining his father-in-law, Curt Matthews, at Matthews-Hargreaves Chevrolet. Joe went on to own and operate Stadium Chevrolet before moving the store in 1990 and renaming it Joe Lunghamer Chevrolet. Joe retired in 2012 and his son carries on the family business today.
Joe and Mandy spent their life together at their homes in Birmingham, Walloon Lake in northern Michigan and the Sanctuary Club on Sanibel Island in Florida. Throughout his life, Joe enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, Michigan football games and was an avid golfer (with three Hole in Ones). He took great pleasure in fine wine and family dinners with his children and grandchildren. Joe and Mandy recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Joe is survived by his wife, Mandy, his son, Joe (Jeanine) Lunghamer, his daughters Jeanne (Tom) Petzold and Julie (Scott) Jenney and 12 grandchildren that he adored.
Visitation will take place on Monday, July 11th from 5-8pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 32515 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak, MI.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 12th at 10am at Holy Name Church, 630 Harmon St., Birmingham, Michigan. Visiting begins at church 9:30am.
A memorial mass will also be held on Monday, August 1st at 10am at St. Francis Xavier church, 513 Howard St., Petoskey, Michigan.
