JOSEPH C. MATTHEWS
POTSDAM- Joseph C. Matthews, 77, unexpectedly passed away on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Joseph was born on August 8, 1947 in Potsdam, son of the late Donald, Sr. and Ileen (Bovay) Matthews. He was a graduate of Parishville-Hopkinton Central School and married Beverly Randall in 1968, and they were blessed with four children. The marriage ended in divorce.
Joe was passionate about his work with vacuums and sewing machines, and repair. He loved the opportunity to teach others how to work on them also. He owned and operated Joe Matthews Vacuum and Singer Store's from Rochester to Massena. He also set up Janome dealerships and high school sewing classrooms across northern New York. He also worked for Kodak in Rochester.
Joseph was a huge Buffalo Bills fan and loved socializing with family and friends and hanging out with his brothers in Rochester, and making new friends.
He is survived by his children Donald (Jessica) Matthews of White Hills, AZ; Ronald (Ann) Matthews of Massena; Dale (Allison) Matthews of Brasher Falls; and Marcia Dillabough, Dickenson Center; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe was predeceased by his parents Donald, Sr. and Ileen; his daughter Debra Matthews Lyon; and four brothers, Tommy Dick, Donald, Jr. and Eddie Matthews.
Friends may call on Monday, June 9, from 11AM-1PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Norwood at the convenience of the family. The family encourages and appreciates those in attendance to feel free to wear any Buffalo Bills themed attire as Joe was a huge fan.
Donations may be made in Joe's memory to the Potsdam Humane Society.
