Joseph Francis Murphy, Sr., affectionately known as Joe, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on December 26, 2025, in Secane, Pennsylvania. Born on July 22, 1947, in Philadelphia, Joe was a proud Vietnam Veteran who dedicated 42 years of service to the United States Army, ultimately achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. His commitment to his country was evident from a young age, as he enlisted and served his nation with honor and dignity during the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars.
Joe's professional journey took him to the 338th Medical Brigade in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he worked from 1991 until his retirement in 2007. During those years, he forged countless friendships that would last a lifetime, enriching the lives of those around him. He was known for his strong and patient demeanor, always greeting everyone with a warm smile and a light-hearted joke. His selflessness and resilience made him someone people wanted to be around, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to know him.
A graduate of West Catholic High School, Joe was not just a soldier or a dedicated employee; he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Young (Min) Murphy, who cherished their years together. Joe's legacy continues through their children, Joseph F. Murphy, Jr. and Theresa A. Michio, as well as his dear son-in-law, Andrew W. Michio. Joe found immense joy in the presence of his grandchildren: Damien J. Michio, Gianna A. Michio, Adam J. Murphy, and Caleb W. Michio. He loved spending time with them, sharing stories about history and bonding over their shared love for music.
Joe fondly remembered the moments spent with family, often engaged in discussions about history or enjoying his favorite action war movies. His love of reading, particularly historical texts, made him a knowledgeable source of stories and facts that captivated his loved ones. His passion for life, and history, defined him and will be missed deeply by his family.
He is also survived by his dear brothers, William J. Murphy and Francis P. House, Jr. and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe now joins his deceased family members, including his parents, William J. Murphy, Loretta Sarah Loughran-House, and his stepfather, Francis P. House, Sr., and siblings, Michael Murphy and John T. Murphy, Loretta Murphy, Catherine Fries, Patricia Schott, and Maryann House.
In honoring his life, we remember the joy he brought to our lives and the strength he imparted to others. Joe's legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched, his laughter echoing through the memories of family gatherings and moments shared, each one a testament to the remarkable man he was.
The viewing will take place at Donohue Funeral Home in Upper Darby on January 2, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass at St. Laurence Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, and concluding with a burial at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery at 12:15 PM.
