Joseph Francis Passanante, Jr., of Washington Township, passed away on October 10, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on Christmas Eve, 1947, "Joe" lived a life filled with laughter, song, and a deep love for family and friends.
A Philadelphia native and proud Eagle Scout, Joe lived by the values of loyalty, integrity, and kindness. He maintained lifelong friendships with his classmates from St. Ambrose School and LaSalle College High School and continued to forge new friendships in every stage of his life. Friends knew him affectionately as "Army Joe", the man who never met a stranger and never forgot a friend.
From childhood, Joe made music with his two best friends in their trio, The Hitchhikers, inspired by their favorite group, The Kingston Trio. The Hitchhikers appeared on Ted Mack and the Original Amateur Hour in 1965, and continued to make music together, alongside other childhood friends, collectively known as the "Real Men."
A proud graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1971, Joe carried the Academy's values of Duty, Honor, and Country throughout his life. During his years at West Point, he was a cherished member of both the Glee Club and The Headliners, the Academy's five-person vocal combo. Joe and the West Point Glee Club appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Mike Douglas Show, and he and The Headliners were invited to perform at the White House for President Richard Nixon in 1971. His passion for music endured throughout his life-he was a natural entertainer, always ready with a guitar, a grin, and a song to share.
Joe was a devoted fan of all Philadelphia sports teams and a proud, outspoken hater of the Dallas Cowboys-a badge of honor he wore with humor and gusto.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph F. and Anna (Manzo) Passanante. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Florence (Sciscio) Passanante; his children, Lisa Passanante and Joseph F. Passanante III (Giovanna); and his brother, Dennis Passanante (Kathy). He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Michael and Karen Sciscio, and Lisa and Don Terch, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him dearly. Among his many accomplishments, being "Dad" was perhaps his greatest. He will be remembered fondly by his children for his unwavering support for them (and for blasting their eardrums with the Kingston Trio for over 40 years).
A visitation will be held at Gardner Funeral Home in Runnemede, NJ on Friday, October 17, 2025 from 10-12pm followed by a memorial service at 12pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe's memory to "Tunnel to Towers" - https://dogood.t2t.org/give.

Joe was one of my favorite classmates at West Point. And while we had very little contact through the years, I always recall our days at the Academy with fond memories.
.There is not much I can say regarding his passing, but the family should find comfort in the thought that Joe is enjoying Eternal happiness in God`s infinite kingdom. His mind is clear, his heart is bursting with love and his spirit knows the joy that God`s children catch only glimpses of here on earth. His passing is just a small piece of the big picture. May he rest in peace and enjoy eternal happiness. Joe Albano, US MA class of 1971.

This is the first time I have ever been sadden by the mention of Joe Passanante. I knew him from traveling with the Glee Club, but even more so when we were in the same detail Company at Beast Barracks under Cadet Jack Pringle. I had some rough times at West Point, but that detail was the best I ever felt and it was mostly because of Joe. You just forgot any bad thoughts around Joe. I will not go into any details, nor will I say you always behaved yourself with him, but it was always fun. I have not kept in touch, other than reunions, but his memory will be with me always. His life can be described as Professionally Done. Thanks Joe!

He was someone who was your friend as soon as you met. There was no way to be sad around him, he brought nothing but cheerfulness. He made my time in the glee club gleeful. As a classmate, a fellow Philadelphian, and lover of song and music he will be remembered and missed.

I met Joe 58 years ago when we found ourselves as roommates on Day 1 of Beast Barracks. All this time later, I still consider Joe as one of my very best friends. He was in my wedding, was at my daughter´s wedding, knew all of my kids, stationed together - lots of singing, talking, grousing and friendship. I was at Joe´s wedding to Flo and she was definitely his soulmate - so happy he found her!
The world has lost a little luster but is better for him having been it. Hope you and Ray are up there making the Trio proud!!

I met Joe Plebe year at West Point in the Cadet Glee Club. Half of my family was also from Philly, and I was a huge fan of the Kingston Trio as well, so Joe and I got along great. We sang together for 4 years on many trips and shows, and Joe was always the life of the party. I will always remember singing with Joe in the folk group and the Glee Club. We have lost a true talent and a great human being. If I hear a Kingston Trio song wafting through the wind or in my mind, I know it is Joe serenading us from above. Be thou at peace, Joe. It is an honor to have known you.

Joe Passante was a dear friend and WP classmate! Joe could cheer up a room, cheer Army sports teams to victory, and his singing ability was second-2-none! Joe will be missed because of his "Authenticity" and his willingness to serve all who were in need. We lost a "Good Man" and today "Good Men are hard to find! Rest in Peace my friend - Jeff Rock PD'71

Joe was one of the finest and friendliest young men that I ever had the privilege of meeting as one of his classmates at West Point. I never forgot him. He has been in my heart, and held my highest respect, all these decades. The world was a better place because you were here, Joe.

AND I have always been a huge fan of the Kingston Trio!

I really came to know Joe "Pass" when as West Point cadets we worked together on songs for our class's 100th Night Show, 100 days before graduation. He was a phenominal musician, singer and co-songwriter and we stayed in touch over the years. He was truly a GREAT guy. His passing caught me by sad surprise. See you on the other side, old friend.

Lisa and I overlapped with Joe at Ft. Bragg in 1971-72. Joe and I were not in the same unit, but Lisa and I loved watching his performances at a local club. He was a warm and funny guy. We are sure he is deeply missed.
