Joseph was born on March 31, 1929, in Bandy, Virginia, and was the son of the late Joseph R. and Nancy Cantrell Pruitt. Joseph was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a retired coal miner, being a member of the UMWA Local #1594. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ellen Young Pruitt; two daughters, Angela Faye Pruitt; Teresa Gail Pruitt; five sisters, Alta Wyatt, Maize Houston, Bessie Houston, Avis Boyd, and Sarah Ball; two brothers, Otis Pruitt and Charlie Pruitt; and grandchildren, Brian Newberry and Tony Newberry. Joseph was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Also, surviving are six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren along with several family and friends.
Funeral services for Joseph Alexander Pruitt will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Kenny Pruitt and Rev. Joe Horn officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Chris Pruitt, Jordan Vance, Jason Kennedy, Ray Vandyke, "Chico" Wade, and Robbie Vandyke and Scott Kennedy. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military rites. The UMWA Chaplin Corps will conduct services. The Pruitt family will receive friends from 11-1 on Saturday at the funeral home.
