Joseph E. Romano, 77, whose life was lived with passion, purpose, and an abundance of love, passed away on September 26, 2024. His journey, which began in Vineland, New Jersey, took him from the wrestling mats of his youth to his favorite fishing waters, and into the hearts of countless people he touched through his work, family, and community.
Born on April 30, 1947, Joseph was the son of Vineland's former mayor, Joseph E. Romano, and Angelina Romano. From a young age, he was taught that a life of service was one worth living-a lesson that shaped him for the rest of his days.
In high school, Joseph was co-captain of the track team and a star wrestler. His athleticism and leadership carried him to Athens and Monmouth Colleges. Later, he made history by becoming the first wrestling coach at Cumberland County College, a role that perfectly matched his drive to pioneer and uplift others.
Joseph's greatest pride came from coaching his son, Jeremy, to state and national wrestling titles. Coaching was more than just a passion; it was part of his essence. His legacy as a coach wasn't defined by accolades, though he was honored as Mercer County's Coach of the Year at Hopewell Valley High School; his real impact, however, was in the lives of the young men he mentored, many of whom still remember his guidance fondly.
Away from the wrestling mat, Joseph found joy in fishing, a hobby he pursued with the same dedication and humor he brought to everything. Friends remember his ability to always find the perfect fishing spot and come back with a tale that would keep everyone laughing for years to come.
Joseph's career in service began at Vineland State School, and over the years, he rose to leadership roles at North Princeton Developmental Center and the Paramus Veterans Home. His crowning achievement came as the CEO of the Vineland Veterans Home, where he fought tirelessly to secure funding for a new state-of-the-art facility. His name is etched on a plaque by the entrance, a testament to his commitment to the veterans under his care. To the residents and employees alike, he was more than a leader-he was their advocate, always striving to improve their lives.
In his later years, Joseph proudly served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks, combining his love for leadership with his deep commitment to serving others.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Cynthia Romano. Their marriage was filled with love and affection, a bond that remained strong until his final days. He is also survived by his son Jeremy Romano (Rovena); his siblings Dolores Middleton (Robert), former mayor Robert Romano (Ann), and Gregory Romano (Carol); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, JoAnn Romano.
Joseph E. Romano lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication, both on land and at sea. He leaves behind a legacy of service and love that will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be remembered as a coach who gave his all to his teams, a fisherman who sought serenity, and a man who fought for veterans with the same devotion as he did for his own family. To those who knew him best, Joseph was a friend-the kind of friend who'd bait your hook and help reel in your troubles with a steady hand.
Family and friends will be received from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at DeMarco – Luisi Funeral Home, 2755 S. Lincoln Ave., Vineland, NJ 08361. Burial will be private for family. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home – Vineland "Patient Fund", 524 N.W. Blvd., Vineland, NJ 08360.
