Joseph "Joe" Duane Shelton, 81, of Bloomington passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on March 5, 1943 in Bloomington, Indiana the son of Theodore and Violet (Harp) Shelton.
Joe was a graduate of Bloomington High School South class of 1961. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp serving from 1963-1968 during the Vietnam War. Joe married the love of his life Frances Louise Garvin on March 15, 1969 in Bloomington. He served with the Indiana Army National Guard from1982-2003 retiring as Command Sergeant Major with the 38th Division Artillery. He was a machinist for NSA Crane retiring after 30 years.
Joe was a member of Central Wesleyan Church for 50 years and attended Bloomington Eastview Church of the Nazarene. He was a member of the American Legion post 18 and VFW post 604. Joe loved singing gospel at local churches and going out to eat with friends. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, reading, fishing, driving long distance trips, and sitting on his front porch swing.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Louise Shelton; four children, Robert Wright, Bradley Shelton, Sandra Davis and Becca Collier; two brothers, John Shelton and Paul Shelton; sister, Tina Blackwell; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Debbie Arnett and a sister Janice Copenhaver.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old State Rd 37 in Bloomington with Rev. Bruce Yates officiating. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery with military honors presented by the Monroe County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be given to the American Cancer Society https://donate.cancer.org or the Wounded Warriors Project https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
