Joseph M. Simo (Mickey), 81, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 4, 2024, in Washington, North Carolina. Born on January 6, 1943, in Eagle Lake, Florida, Mickey lived a life rich with passion and purpose that touched the hearts of all who knew him.
As a mechanical engineer by profession, Mickey dedicated his career to innovation and problem-solving. His keen intellect and unwavering work ethic earned him respect among colleagues and clients alike. Yet it was not just his professional achievements that defined him; it was also his zest for life outside of work that truly illuminated his spirit.
A lover of music from an early age, Mickey found joy in melodies both old and new. He greatly enjoyed his time playing the organ and piano in Church during his teenage years and playing the saxophone in the marching band both in High School and College. In his later years he enjoyed learning how to play the guitar and ukulele-his love for music created lasting memories filled with laughter and warmth.
Mickey's affinity for the water was evident through his passion for sailing and weekends at the beach. He cherished weekends spent on the water alongside Ann-the love of his life-and their sons Barry, Jeremy, and David. Those moments were more than just leisure activities; they were opportunities to bond as a family while embracing nature's beauty together.
Sports played an integral role in Mickey's life as well; he enjoyed everything from racing prams (small sailboats) and playing baseball to being a member in the Marching Band of his beloved Auburn Tigers. He instilled that love in each of his sons.
Above all else stood Mickey's devotion to his family. As a loving husband to Ann Simo-a partnership built on mutual respect-he demonstrated what true companionship looks like every day of their lives together. Their shared adventures created an unbreakable bond that will forever be remembered by those fortunate enough to witness it.
As proud fatherhood blossomed into grandparenthood later in life-Mickey embraced this new chapter wholeheartedly-delighting in each moment spent with grandchildren who brought endless joy into their home! From storytelling sessions around the camp fire and weekends on the water to afternoons at the ballpark-it is these treasured experiences that will echo through generations long after he has gone.
In addition to Ann and their three sons Barry (and wife Christina), Jeremy, David-Joseph leaves behind five adoring grandchildren: Jacob, Jae, Ava, Parker & Haiden. Each one carries pieces of him forward into tomorrow-a testament not only of familial ties but also enduring legacy rooted deeply within them!
Though we mourn the loss of such an extraordinary man whose presence enriched our lives immeasurably-we find solace knowing he now sails beyond earthly shores where peace awaits him eternally! May we honor Mikey's memory by cherishing our loved ones fiercely-as he did until the very end!
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Wilkerson Funeral Home between the hours of 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
