Luginbuel Funeral Home - VinitaJoyce Marie Veith, 93, died on June 2, 2024, in Vinita, Oklahoma. For many years she was the secretary of the Superintendent of Vinita Public Schools.
Joyce was born February 3, 1931, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Charles and Violet Sutton. She grew up in Ketchum, where her parents operated the lumber yard and the drug store. The family moved to Stillwater so that the children could attend Oklahoma A and M University (later known as Oklahoma State University). Here she met an agriculture student on the G.I. Bill named Gene Veith, and they were married on June 4, 1950.
Gene took a position as county office manager with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service administering government farm programs. The couple lived in Alva, where their son Gene Edward Jr. was born in 1951, then Buffalo, and finally Vinita, where their twins, Mary Lynn and Jimmy Lynn were born in 1955.
Once the children were in school, Joyce worked as a legal secretary and then as the Superintendent’s secretary, first for the Craig County school system and then for Vinita Public Schools.
Joyce played piano, was a wonderful mother, and was active in church. It was said of her that she never said a bad word about anyone, but always spoke with kindness.
She is survived by her children, Gene Veith of St. Louis, Missouri, Jimmy Veith of Houston, Texas, and Mary Smith of Vinita; 5 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Luginbuel Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Vinita with Pastor Stephanie Crogan officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Vinita, Oklahoma.
