Joyce Wempe Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Springs Funeral Services - Platte on Jan. 5, 2026.
Joyce Ann Wempe, 88, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away at a Memory Care home on December 19, 2025. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Joyce was born in Sturgeon Bay, WI on May 30, 1937 to John and Anne Lilly. She lived in WI and IA growing up. Her adult life was spent in KS, MO, and CO. She loved to cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals and the KC Chiefs. Joyce loved to read books, do word search puzzles, and watch Lester Holt on the evening news. In her final years, her greatest joy was her beloved dog Penny.

Joyce is survived by her four children Julie Nava (Russ) of Colorado Springs, CO; Jeffrey Wempe of Falcon, CO; James M. Wempe of Kansas City, KS, and Jason Wempe Sr. of Mesa AZ. She has six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Jeanne Regan of Key Biscayne, FL.

The Family wishes to thank the caregivers who cared for Joyce in her final months/years. Abbey Clarke, now of Bellingham, WA, cared for Joyce during her final three years. Joyce looked forward to Abbey's visit each week. Abbey quickly became more than a caregiver- she became family. We also wish to thank the owner and caregivers of Kettles House who provided compassionate and loving care during her final four months.

Joyce is to be cremated. There will be no services. Per her request, her ashes will be spread in the ocean off Key Biscayne, FL.

I will always remember Miss Joyce's kind spirit. She was a wonderful soul. May she rest in peace.

Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting Gerard, as they had been divorced for over 50 years before Joyce's passing. However, I look forward to meeting Joyce again one day in Heaven.

Joyce was such a lovely lady. We were fortunate to know her through her son, our dear friend Jim (JW). Years ago, we were so pleased to have Joyce stay at our home on a visit to Topeka. It was a special visit, as our home was originally owned by Dr. & Mrs. Woodworth (dear friends of Dr. Gerard & Ruth Wempe) and where Joyce spent the night in the same room as she did years ago the night before her wedding to Dr. Jerry Wempe. Joyce was a loving, gentle person and adored her family. She will be missed beyond measure. Keeping all the family close in thoughts & prayers.

I have so many wonderful memories of Joyce. One of my favorites was an Easter where the egg cartons got mixed up and we ended up coloring one carton of raw eggs. It was a complete mess when some fell on the floor and true to Joyce´s nature she laughed and laughed as we cleaned raw eggs off the kitchen floor. Joyce always made the best of the situation. Know that she was loved and will be dearly missed.
Sending love and healing.

Julie and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss.
Mrs. Wempe (as I always called her) was like a second mother to me-she was fun and always welcoming. I will always cherish the memories of her kindness and laughter. Please know that my heart is with you and your family during this difficult time, and that your Mother's spirit will never be forgotten.
