Juan Dale "Smitty" Smith, 79, of Keyser, WV, formerly of Galveston, Texas, died Friday, February 3, 2023 at his residence.
Juan was born on October 6, 1943, in Pleasant Creek, Barbour County, WV, the son of the late Sylvanus C. Smith and Louise V. (Boyer) Smith. In addition to his parents, Juan was preceded in death by his brothers Sylvanus C. "Buck" Smith and Curtis Smith.
After graduating from Phillipi High School in 1962, Juan enlisted in the Air Force to see the world. While stationed at Ellington Field in Houston, he met the love of his life, Joyce Billings and they were married in August 1968. Over a 20 year military career, Juan was deployed to bases on three continents and was also a proud Vietnam War veteran. Juan completed his military career working in intelligence in Langley VA achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. After the military, Juan temporarily retired to Crystal Beach, Texas but soon began a second career spending 18 years in the IT department of The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. At the conclusion of his second career, Joyce and Juan spent a number of years traveling the Western part of the United States in their travel trailer before finally moving back to West Virginia in 2017 to be with the friends and family he had been away from for so long.
Surviving are his wife Joyce, son Alan Smith and wife Amy of Chesaning, MI; daughter Jody Cooper and husband Scott of LaPorte, TX, grandchildren Aaron Cooper, Brandon Cooper, Gabrielle Smith, Elise Smith, Ava Smith and Lauren Kline; brother George Smith of Fort Ashby, WV, nieces Kim Brinegar and Missy (Dave) Llewellyn, nephews Dana (Betty) Smith and Tim (Dena) Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Interment, with military honors will be at the Canan Family Cemetery, Burlington, WV.
