Nick then attended Utah State University where he met his sweetheart Janis Bell. Nick and Janis were married and sealed September 7, 1984, in the House of the Lord, Idaho Falls, Idaho, for time and for all eternity. Nick joined the Utah National Guard in military intelligence while attending to his university studies. while with the Utah National Guard he attained the rank of Captain. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and another Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, with an emphasis in Education, with certifications in 1986. Nick continued his education and received a Master's in School Counseling from Idaho State University, 2001.
Nick enjoyed working for Madison School District, Brigham Young University – Idaho, Tueller Counseling, and privately as a counselor to many. Throughout his life, Nick and Janis added many members to their family, who he prized above his career and mission service.

Some of the joys in his life consisted of counseling youth and as a volunteer at the local library. He enjoyed playing chess, table tennis, and pirate's dice with the many youth he served throughout the years, who looked up to Nick as a mentor and a friend. He enjoyed spending time fishing and swimming in the Teton River, behind his home with his family and friends.
Nick had a profound interest in family history work for the living and the dead. Nick was often a lightning rod for sociality, reunions, and wholesome relationships. His profound ability to listen and relate to any person who would cross his path in life was notable and admired by those who had the pleasure to know him. His mighty testimony in the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and his love of God and family was present in all that he did in life, and continues on in the life hereafter. He was a friend to all and never belittled or made enemies of any person he knew. Judgment and consternation were never in his nature or demeanor. He truly lived by the Savior's divine mandate to love one another.
