Julian Dickerson "Dick" Simpson, 66, husband of Cindy Simpson, passed away on December 19, 2024 in Lexington, Kentucky. Dick was born in Lexington on July 18, 1958 to the late Tom and Patsy Simpson. As a child he had a passion for broadcast journalism and followed that passion to the University of South Carolina where he obtained a degree in video journalism. He began his career with Fayette County Public Schools in [1981] and spent the next 36 years as a dedicated [employee] of FCPS. He was instrumental in the launching and early development of Channel 13 at FCPS, dedicating his last ten years as station manager. He always felt fortunate to have found a career doing something he loved, and relished in the opportunity to announce many middle and high school sporting events.
More important to him than his career, however, was his family, to which he was as devoted as anyone could be. He grew up in a home full of laughter and revelry with three brothers and a sister, all of whom remain close today and still enjoy inside jokes and ribbing one another. He was always present and played an extraordinarily large part in his children's life. From the many trips to Disney, the countless adventures on trails far and wide, volunteering as a soccer and t-ball coach, as well as serving as president of Commonwealth Soccer Club, Dick never missed the chance to be a source of love and inspiration for his family. Maine was a special place for Dick, and he led his family on many exciting vacations in and around Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. He was a great listener and always made everyone around him feel appreciated and worthy. Growing up with four siblings, it was his dream to one day have a big family of his own, and that is exactly what he is leaving behind, a large family that adored him like no other and that are now left heartbroken and at a loss.
In addition to his wife, Cindy, he is survived by his children, Claire (Tyson) Adams, Patrick (Abby) Hammond, and Elaine Simpson; grandchildren Eloise, Forrest, Grey and Jade; siblings, Bruce (Cindi) Simpson, Lynn (late Jack) McDaniel, Lee (Julie) Simpson, and Jim Simpson; and the entire Osborne family.
A celebration of life service for Dick will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024 at 3:30pm at Clark Legacy Center-Brannon Crossing, Nicholasville, with a gathering to follow until 6:00pm.

I knew Dick very well in college. We watched super bowls together as t his apartment with Mike. He was such a fun guy. After I married and moved back to WV he came to visit me and my husband. I tried to get in touch with him last year but could not make a contact as he had retired. I'm in shock as I assume everyone is. I was glad to have had him as a part of my college years. God bless Dicks family for their loss. Julie Clayton

Dick never failed to be a source of joy, whether meeting him at work or a social event. That warm smile and ready wit! We will miss him.

Cindy and family,
My heart aches with yours at the loss of your husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. As a colleague of Dick´s with the Fayette County Schools, I can affirm what you already know, that Dick was an exemplary educator and professional. He was extra competent, dedicated, and a total team player focused on the needs of our students and teachers. He will be greatly missed by our community. Please take care of each other. Thoughts and prayers for all.
