Weddle Funeral Service - StaytonKaren Lee Hanson, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in Woodburn, Oregon on October 28, 2025. Born on May 28, 1944, in Salem, Oregon, Karen was the cherished daughter of Rita Theresa Gehlen and John Peter “Pete” Mertz. She carried with her the warmth and resilience of her family roots throughout her life.
A proud graduate of Sierra Catholic High School, Karen began her career in accounting and later brought her dedication and compassion to roles at Tom-Tom Restaurants, the YMCA, and the American Red Cross. Her work reflected her deep commitment to service and community, values she upheld in every chapter of her life.
Karen had a spirited love for life’s simple joys. She found delight in dog shows, especially showing her beloved poodles. Her leisure time was often spent with a good book in hand, a bingo card at the ready, or a deck of cards shared among friends during games of bunco and other favorites. She treasured outings to the beach, shopping trips, and meals shared with those she loved—always embracing the chance to connect, laugh, and make memories.
Above all, Karen’s heart belonged to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rita and Pete, and her brother Robert “Bob” Allen Mertz and leaves behind a legacy of love in her children, Michael James Hanson and Scott Lee Hanson; her nieces, Kathy and Carol Hendricks; her grandchildren, Ashley Huffman, Kassandra Hanson, Andrew Hanson, David Hanson, Michael Edwin Hanson, and Allie Hanson; and eight great-grandchildren who brought her endless pride and joy.
