Karen Y. Wentz, 76, of Chambersburg, PA passed onto her Heavenly Home on Thursday, June 29, 2023 from the Select Specialty Hospital of Holy Spirit Medical Center, Camp Hill, PA. Born October 5, 1946 in Fort Knox, KY, she was the daughter of the late Col. Hugh F. and Ida Virginia (Snider) Young.
As a child of a military family, Karen had the opportunity to reside overseas in both Germany and Japan, then returned to the States where she completed her secondary education. Upon high school graduation, she went on to obtain her teaching degree from Shippensburg Teachers College where she met her best friend and partner in life, Edward. They were married on September 6, 1969. She began her teaching career while Ed was in the Army, and upon his return, they soon began a family. Throughout her career she earned her Master's Equivalency in Education. Karen was employed by the Chambersburg Area School District as a teacher, spending most of her career at Fayetteville Elementary School where she taught 2nd grade until her retirement in 2006. She had a special talent for making her classroom fun with lessons that were vibrant and interactive.
Karen was a member of First United Methodist Church of Chambersburg where she sang in the Merry Methodist choir and created beautiful display cases. She was an avid reader, animal lover, and became a true sports fan. Karen was very devoted to her family and extremely invested in their endeavors and well-being. She was a sweet and thoughtful friend, always trusted to lend a compassionate ear.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Edward N. Wentz; daughters, Elizabeth D. Bunch of Amherst, NY and Rebecca C. Bumpas of Havertown, PA; sons-in-law, Mark W. Bunch and Jonathan J. Bumpas; grandchildren, Nyah Walter and Pacey Walter; step-grandchildren, Michael Bunch, Matthew Bunch, Nathan Bumpas and Julia Bumpas; sister, Virginia Leback; sister-in-law, Gayle Young; nephews, Trey Young and Cameron Young; and nieces, Lucy Williams and Lily Young.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her infant granddaughter, Lily Wren Bumpas and brother, Hugh F. Young, Jr.
Graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at a later date. Arrangements are by the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
