Katherine (Smollin) Evertsen, 78, of Waterford, NY passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Florida. Born in Troy, New York, on June 5, 1947, to the late Vincent and Catherine Smollin. Katherine was a proud 1966 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy.
Katherine was the heart of her family, sharing fifty-seven cherished years of marriage with her beloved husband, Leonard Evertsen, until his passing in May of 2024. Katherine’s greatest joy was her family, especially her six grandchildren, Cody, Tyler, Haylee, Hunter, Breann, and Ryan—who she loved to spend time with. She is survived by her devoted children: Tanya (Jack) Coonradt of Stuart, Florida; Leonard (Stacie) Evertsen of Waterford, New York; and Scott (Shannon) Evertsen of Bluffton, South Carolina. She also leaves behind her siblings: Robert (Barbara) Smollin of Troy, New York; Bill (Mary) Smollin of Clifton Park, New York; and Eileen Spears of Stuart, Florida
Katherine’s home was a hub of love and laughter, where she was a stay-at-home mom to her three young children until she entered the work force. She shared countless family events—from holiday gatherings, birthday parties, graduations, weddings, and joyful reunions at her home. Many memories that were created by Katherine will live on through her family and friends, her circle of lifelong friends, who were like family, added to the richness of these occasions, filling her life with shared stories and enduring bonds. Katherine also found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as knitting beautiful creations, curling up with a good book or doing sudoku puzzles, savoring late afternoon lunches with loved ones, and indulging her legendary sweet tooth.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the DUFRESNE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 2 to 5pm. Services will be held on Sunday at 4:00pm at the funeral home. Interment in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY on Monday morning at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations to Treasure Coast Hospice in Katherine’s memory. Her life was a gift, and her love will forever bind the many friends and family she held dear. For condolences, www.dufresnefuneralhome.com.
