Kathy Sue Friend, 67, entered into rest on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO after a sudden illness. Kathy was born on April 9, 1956 in Neosho, MO, the daughter of Harold and Ethel (Porter) McInturff. She was a lifelong area resident, a graduate of East Newton High School- Class of 1974, Crowder College, College of the Ozarks, and John Brown University. On December 16, 1977, Kathy and James Friend were united in marriage. Kathy served as legal secretary for both the Douglas Law Firm and Hank Johnson-Attorney at Law. After her legal career, Kathy would embark on a new career in education. She obtained her teaching certificate in special education where she served ten years at Benton Elementary School in the Neosho School District.
Kathy was a devout Christian and a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, where she made lifetime memories camping and spending time outdoors. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the Dulcimer and musical instruments, sewing and quilting, and gardening.
Kathy is survived by her husband of forty-five years, James Friend. Additional survivors include two sons, Rile Friend and wife, Kim, of Lamar, MO, and Lafe Friend, of Granby, MO. Five grandchildren: Ryder, Rex, Leilee, Paxyn, and Violet Friend. One sister, Kristi Berner and husband, Clyde, Granby, MO. Two brothers, Loy McInturff and wife, Susan, Port Orchard, WA, and Lowell McInturff and wife, Twyla, Neosho, MO. She is preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Neosho. Danny Boggs will officiate. In her honor, the family has requested donations be made to the Hillcrest Church of Christ or the Neosho Christian School, both in care of Clark Funeral Home, P.O. Box, Neosho, MO, 64850.
