Kay Copeland

With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Kay Copeland, a cherished resident of Denton, Texas, who passed away on May 17, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. Kay's unwavering patriotism, her devotion to family, and her profound impact on her community will forever be remembered.
Kay was born on July 16, 1934 to Vivian and Riley Cross and grew up in Denton, where she cultivated a deep love for her hometown. A proud alumnus of North Texas State University (UNT), Kay cherished her time there and formed lifelong connections that endured throughout her life as was evidenced through her continued support, mentoring and involvement in the Chi Omega Sorority.
As a mother, Kay's love and dedication knew no bounds. She treasured her role as a mother to Karen and Jamey, and her involvement in their lives was steadfast. From homeroom to being the team mom, Kay actively participated in every aspect of her children's lives, providing constant support and nurturing their dreams.
Kay's commitment to service extended beyond her family, as she dedicated herself to volunteering and serving her community. Her loyalty and passion for Texas led her to serve multiple terms under County Commissioner Jim Jackson until her eventual retirement from Dallas County, forging a lasting friendship with Jim and his wife, Sue. Kay's tireless efforts to improve the lives of her fellow Texans earned her the respect and admiration of all who knew her.
In her selfless devotion to her Country, Kay volunteered her time in service to three U.S. presidents-Reagan, Bush Sr., and George W. Her commitment to the nation she loved exemplified her patriotism and her desire to make a difference.
Kay found solace and guidance in her faith as a devoted Episcopalian. Her love for her church (Christ Church Plano) and her unwavering spiritual devotion were foundational elements of her life. Her faith provided her with strength, comfort, and a sense of purpose that she carried with her throughout her days.
Kay will be remembered as a true pillar of her community, known for her community involvement and her ability to support deserving politicians. Her insight and wisdom as a kingmaker were unparalleled, and she played a crucial role in the success of many well-deserving individuals. Kay's influence touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on her community.
Lifelong friendships were a hallmark of Kay's life, and she held each of them dear to her heart. Her warm and welcoming nature meant that she never met a stranger, and she treated everyone she encountered with kindness and genuine interest. Kay's friendships were built on a foundation of love, trust, and shared experiences, and her memory will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known her.
Kay is preceded in death by her beloved daughter Karen, her sisters Carol Ivey and Patsy Patterson, and her parents Vivian and Riley Cross. She leaves behind her son Jamey and his wife Lisa, grandchildren Allix Jackson and husband Randle, JT Copeland, Rob Ewest, Andrew Ewest and wife Amber, and Travis Ewest and wife Ashlyn, as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts.
During her recent time of need, Kay was fortunate to have received exceptional care from Quinton at Brookdale in Austin and the compassionate team at Wyndham Court in Plano, including Shannon, Britney, and Sonya. Additionally, the family extends heartfelt gratitude to Kevin, Melody, and PJ from Amity Hospice for their dedicated support. We are also immensely grateful for the pastoral care and support provided by Father Jeff Rawn and the team at Christ Church Plano.
As we bid farewell to Kay, let us remember her as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a passionate community advocate, and a dear friend to many. Her legacy will continue to inspire us to be kind, compassionate, and dedicated in all our endeavors. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory live on in our hearts forever.
