Obituary- Keith Marvin Young

Our family is mourning the loss of Keith "KY" Marvin Young, 75, of Austin, Texas. He had a peaceful passing listening to The Beatles, surrounded by his family on February 7, 2026.

Keith was born on April 23, 1950, in Austin, Texas to Ann Smedal and Keith Preston Young. Keith attended Highland Park Elementary School, Lamar Junior High and graduated from McCallum High School in 1968. He was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church. The Young family lived in Tarrytown, Highland Park West and Highland Hills as Keith grew up, and he picked up two younger brothers along the way, Steve and Bob.

Keith grew up on Longhorns Football, the Austin Senators, Tex-Mex food, movies at the Paramount, State, Varsity and Americana theatres, Holiday House hamburgers, Kirschner's fried chicken, Dale Baker's Bar-B-Cue, the Hill County and Highland Lakes.

Keith's childhood also included numerous family vacations to his father's home state of Wyoming, his mother's home state of Wisconsin, and other destinations in the lower 48. It helped develop his lifelong love of travel, especially road trips where he could see the sites up close and personal.

Keith also turned into quite the music fanatic as he grew up, loving different genres of music, the development of the Austin music scene, and getting out to live shows at Armadillo World Headquarters, Castle Creek and other venues. At the time of his passing, he still had his iPod collection packed with more than ten thousand songs.

Keith worked in Wyoming for four straight summers following his high school graduation. Three of those summers in Yellowstone National Park and the fourth at Pahaska Tepee (Buffalo Bill's old hunting lodge) just east of the park. He developed many long-term friendships during those summers, which led to a good number of reunions over the decades.

Keith's college days began at North Texas State in Denton just in time for Mean Joe Greene's senior year. He had wild tales of living in West Dorm, and enjoyed basketball at the campus arena dubbed "The Pit." His only complaint was having to drive to Dallas for beer/liquor since Denton was "dry" at that time. Keith would finish his college studies back in Austin at the University of Texas where he earned his degree in Journalism.

Keith migrated to Denver for several years in the mid-1970s where he became a lifelong fan of the Denver Broncos and attended several outdoor concerts at Mile High Stadium. He also liked the Denver radio station that played the "Rocky Mountain Way" every afternoon at 5 o'clock.

Keith worked nearly three decades in the Transportation Department of the Austin Independent School District where he met his wife, Connie. After many years together, they wed in their Wells Branch home on May 25, 2001. Keith was a devoted father to Cory and Meghan, instilling his love for travel and unwavering loyalty to family and friends. He was a familiar and cherished presence in the Wells Branch community for 25 years, forming many friendships on long walks around the neighborhood with his dogs, most notably with his neighbor and dear friend, Bill Brown.

A devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, Keith is remembered by those who loved him as a story-teller, vehement music lover, sports fan and traveler. He held his road trips close to his heart-especially the wide-open landscapes of Wyoming where he spent many years with family, and a recent trip to Wisconsin with his brother Steve to reconnect with his Norwegian roots. He loved baseball, but basketball was "WC" (who cares) for KY, until his son Cory and grandsons began playing, becoming their biggest fan. Keith loved the Texas Longhorns and cherished he and his brother Bob's tradition of watching the Texas vs OU football game together each year. He and Meghan bonded over their love of Longhorns Volleyball and their dachshund fur babies. His warmth, quiet strength, and deep love for his family and friends will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Keith was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Connie Young and by his parents.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Cory and Gina Nichols, and his daughter, Meghan Nichols. Keith was a loving and proud grandfather to Corbin and Grayson, whose laughter and presence brought him immense joy. His loyal pets, Bismarck and Pearl, were also constant companions and will miss him dearly.

Keith is survived by his brothers, Steven E. Young and his wife, Eleanor, of Dallas, and Robert A. Young and his wife, Diana, of Harlingen, as well as his cherished nieces and nephews: Matthew and Emily Young; Julia and Robert Young; and Marisa Pullman, and by great nephew Clark Henry Young.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Austin, Texas at Mills Pond in Wells Branch at the Keith and Connie Young Memorial Bench.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo, Wyoming.

Donations in Keith's memory may be made to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) 31 Center Dr, Bethesda, MD 20892, or the United States Humane Society, 1255 23rd St. NW, Suite 450. Washington, DC 20037.
