Kelli DeHart Obituary

Kelli Jane (Hinds) DeHart, 57, passed away on May 16, 2022, at Community Howard Hospital in Kokomo. Kelli was born on April 25, 1965, in Muncie, Indiana to Gene and Susan (Roderick) Hinds.
Kelli was a graduate of Cowan High School, Butler University and Indiana Wesleyan University. Kelli had worked in Nuclear Medicine for many years, and she had a true passion for helping her patients. After leaving nuclear medicine, Kelli (along with her husband) found her passion in helping the foster children of Indiana. Kelli had been a foster mother to over twenty-two children: some stays lasting a night while others lasted several years. Kelli also had a passion for animals.
Kelli is survived by her husband of 22 years, Jonathon DeHart; daughters: Cheyenne and Brook DeHart; mother and stepfather, Susan (Roy William Chambers) Hinds-Chambers; mother-in-law, Bess DeBolt; brothers: Roderick (Emily) Hinds and Gregory (Cindy) Hinds; special nieces and nephews: Matthew, Meranda, Autumn, Landon, and Ethan; best friend, Stacy Rullman; sister-friend, Melissa Hinds; aunts and uncle: Pat and (Fred) Dull and Larry (Judy) Hinds; a host of cousins, human and animal friends. Kelli was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents: Vernon and Mary Roderick and her father, Gene Hinds, who passed away in 2014.
A Celebration of Kelli's life will take place at 2:00 PM, Saturday May 21, 2022 at Glad Tidings Assembly of God, 3001 S. Burlington Dr, Muncie, IN 47302. Kelli's family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Muncie Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) or to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Almost 45 years ago, Kelli and I began our friendship, bonded by chocolate chip cookie dough in home ec class. Besides our love of sweets, we also shared a love of nature and enjoyed watching all the animals on my back deck- birds, raccoons, black vultures, and more. She was always interested in my black vulture stories, and I will miss sharing those with her.
I'm blessed that I have been so close with her family as well; they are truly my second family. Growing up, Kel would call on Christmas around 1:30 asking me if we were finished opening up all our gifts, and sometimes I would say, "Almost." After we were finished, I would head over to Gene and Susan's home to enjoy the rest of the day. One year Mom and Dad said it was fine if I had Thanksgiving dinner at Rod's with the rest of the Hinds family. My parents were happy for me to enjoy my other family, and even happier when I brought home leftovers that Melissa had packed up for them.
Kelli always would make me laugh. I am not a phone-talker, but we could chit chat for two hours at a time. Even though we didn't see each other all that often, we'd make the most of our time together. She even became an honorary Pope when she started attending the Pope Reunions.
Pizza King was a wonderful place to eat when we were growing up, and thankfully they are still in business. When we got together, that was often our go-to restaurant, and we would enjoy the few hours we had together, just hanging out.
I'm not ready for Kelli to leave, but I know I will be with her again. Kelli made my life fuller and those lives of everyone who knew her. Love you, Kel!
My love and prayers are with all of you,
Stacy
