Dear Merrit Family,
It is with sorrow that I hear of Ken's death. He was my high school teacher and coach in Pipestone during the mid 50's. He represented everything good about a teacher, coach and mentor on and off the field. I come from a family of nine children and he was always asking me questions about how so many kids could get along. He couldn't believe that the local dairy would weekly deliver 20 gallons of milk and 8 gallons of ice cream to our home. To this day I cannot stand eating ice cream.
Take comfort in knowing this man was a strong inspiration to so many young people.

I remember Mr. Merritt from Hopkins Lindbergh-drivers ed. Thirty two years later, I still remember him. You have my sympathy-he sounded like a wonderful person. I see that I had a lot in common with Ken as in high school, I lived for the outdoors!
What a coincidence that I grew up in Minnetonka/Hopkins and moved to Winthrop in my adult life.

So sorry to learn of Mr. Merritt's passing. I'll always remember him as "Coach" and will carry fond memories of him as my Phy-Ed, Biology, and Drivers Ed teacher and my basketball coach at Winthrop H.S. He was one of my favorites. My deepest sympathy to Louise and the family.

To the Merritt Family,
Mr Merritt was one of my all time favorite teachers at Hopkins High School. I can see him taking tickets at the football games, spending time listening to students in the hall and making history class fun and interesting.
You are in my prayers.

I don't suppose Mr Merritt ever knew what a positive influence he was for me when I was a student in Winthrop. It's been 50+ years since we had contact but I've thought of him often with fondness and respect. He was one of my life's heroes!

John, Sue, Aaron, and the rest of the Merritt family. I am a coworker and friend of Sue's and I wanted to send my condolences to the entire family. I can certainly see how Ken touched the lives of his family. I asked Sue many Friday's what she had planned over the weekend and it was usually camping, fishing, or something outdoors. Ken's love of the outdoors will always be one of those great memories you all hold in your hearts. This is never an time, hopefully you can all celebrate the life each of you shared with him. God bless each of you.

When Mr. Merritt was our 8th grade homeroom teacher in Winthrop, he routinely startled our unruly group into silence by a loud smack of his yardstick on the surface of the desk at the front of the room - with a grin on his face. !! He was one of the best homeroom teachers we had. We loved him, and he was beloved as a basketball coach.

John, I was so sorry to hear about your dad.
May you take comfort in your memories, many of which undoubtedly involve fishing and hunting, and surround yourself with your family's love as you grieve, but also as you celebrate your father's life.
As you know, I understand the pain of losing a parent, but I also know that the grief is far less potent when you take time and savor every day of your life.
So you and your son should go out and get a nice buck, a bunch of birds or a full stringer of crappies in honor of your dad this season. Create some new memories as you remember your father.
