Kenneth Roy Leonard
September 20, 1925 – March 26, 2025
Kenneth Roy Leonard, a devoted father, pioneering engineer, world traveler, and adventurer, passed away peacefully in Loveland, Colorado, on March 26, 2025, at the age of 99.
Born on September 20, 1925, in Boulder, Colorado, Ken was raised by his parents, Alice and Jess Leonard, alongside his brother, Duane, and sisters, Dorene and Rosie. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1943 before serving his country with honor in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army.
Following his service, Ken pursued his passion for engineering at the University of Colorado, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His career began at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs and later took him to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver. However, his true calling emerged in the field of cryogenic engineering, where he became highly regarded in the industry. Over the years, Ken worked for and founded several cryogenics companies in the Denver/Boulder area. As a published engineer, his contributions to refrigeration technology played a role in projects ranging from early Apollo spacecraft to cutting-edge developments with SpaceX. His name appears on multiple patents related to cryogenic systems, a testament to his lifelong dedication to innovation.
Ken retired to Nederland, Colorado, where he embraced his love for the outdoors. An active hiker and adventurer, he explored the world, traveling across South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the British Isles. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorene Leonard, and his daughter, Sharene (Leonard) Owen. He is survived by his children, Randal Leonard and his wife, W. Ruth Leonard; Patrice Leonard and her husband, Robert Larsen; and Jennifer Buchmeier and her husband, Peter Buchmeier. His legacy also lives on through his nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Ken's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Having lived his life without fanfare, he chose to complete the cycle of life in the same spirit. His legacy of ingenuity, adventure, and quiet determination lives on in the lives of those he touched.
