Ku-Ying Chang passed away in her home in Pittsford on February 20, 2025 at the age of 82. She had first moved to Pittsford in 1977.
Ku-Ying was born the second of seven children in Wukang, Hunan in China on August 28, 1942 to Tso-Liang Hsiao and Chi-Mei Chen. The Hsiao family moved to Taipei, Taiwan in 1951. She earned an undergraduate degree in English Literature from National Taiwan University in 1965. She was bright and full of life – as proud of her adventures playing hooky as she was of her good grades.
She immigrated to the United States in 1966 to study History at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Wisconsin. In Madison, she married her husband Hui in 1971.
She was a cherished daughter, sibling, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, and friend. She nurtured life long friendships and helped to build a vibrant community. She actively engaged with her community, whether it be volunteering at the Pittsford school district, teaching Chinese at the Rochester Chinese School, or hosting an annual Christmas Eve party attended by more than a dozen families. As her children grew older, she studied for her real estate license. She spent a few years working as an agent before relocating for Hui's job to Tokyo, Japan in the mid-1990s. Many of her later years were devoted to caring for Hui who suffered from Parkinson's disease. Neighbors often saw her gardening in the yard; gardening was her joy and rejuvenated her mind, body and soul. Her close friends relied on her sympathetic ear and she was known by all for her sweet and warm nature.
She was predeceased by her husband Hui and her sister Ku-Lan Hsiao. She is survived by her daughters Hetty and Kathy (Michael), grandson Zeke, her siblings, Ku-Yung, Ku-Huai, Ku-Ling, Ku-Hsiang, and Ku-Chuan and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held in the spring.
