L. June Chenault, wife, mother, and "Gran," known as "Miss June" to hundreds of children over the years, passed away on June 7, 2025, in Henderson, Texas. She was 88 years old.
She was born on May 26, 1937, in Corsicana, Texas, to James Overton (J.O.) Crider and Mary Lola Richardson Crider. Later, her family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Central High School in 1955. She spent most of her adult life in Dallas and Coppell before retiring to Mineola, Texas, in the early 1990s. In 2019, she moved to Henderson. June's later years were marked by limited mobility and chronic pain, but her determination remained strong.
June had a love for children that was evident throughout her life. She was a Girl Scout leader, trainer, and camp director, served as a board member of Boy Scout Troop 842, and was a past president and life member of the PTA. In the 1970s, she began her career in childcare as the owner of Northlake Creative Learning Center in Coppell, a 120-child daycare she built and operated for over 20 years. She later owned or directed other childcare centers in East Texas.
June was a member of the Broad Street Church of Christ, where she was always willing to support the youth or cook for church events. The church truly was her extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James Gatz; and her previous husbands, Harrison Chenault and Roy Bailey. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Cupples and husband Randall; her son, David Chenault and wife Lynna; her grandchildren, April, Ashley, Abbey, Peyton, Lara, Emery, and Harrison; and two great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers include Wayne Williams, Les Mitchell, Roger Lennon, Peyton Chenault, Ashley Cupples, and Harrison Chenault.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, 5 p.m. at the South Main Church of Christ in Henderson, TX. The family will receive friends for visitation one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, June requested that donations be made to the "Kids Helping Kids" charity at Broad Street Church of Christ in Mineola, Texas. If you choose to send flowers, she absolutely loved carnations.
