It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Bowdre, a passionate lover of learning, travel, and the natural world, who passed away on February 7, 2025, surrounded by love, shortly after celebrating his 84th birthday. Born and raised in Michigan, Larry developed an early curiosity about the world that blossomed into a lifetime of exploration and discovery.
After serving in the United States Navy, Larry earned a Doctorate in Zoology from Michigan State University, a field that allowed him to combine a deep love for animals with an unwavering commitment to understanding the complexities of life. His research and 20 years of teaching at the University of Miami inspired countless others and left a lasting impact. In addition to his professorship, Larry also had a full career with the Internal Revenue Service, dedicating his years as a public servant in Criminal Investigation. During his time with the IRS, Larry made lasting friendships that continued on well past his retirement from public service.
In recent years, Larry loved to watch his pseudo-grandkids (children of Megan and Casey Conly), learn with the same equipment and books that brought him so much joy in his younger years. Whether it was showing them how to use a telescope, how to weigh an ant, or how to code a robot, Larry's eyes would dance watching the spark of learning ignite in the next generation.
Anyone who crossed paths with Larry knew he was an avid birdwatcher, a hobby that brought him immense joy, and one that he loved to share with anyone who would listen. The natural world was both a classroom and a sanctuary, where Larry often found peace and inspiration. His travels took him to many corners of the world, each journey enriching his understanding of different cultures and ecosystems. Larry traveled alone and with various scientific and birding groups all over the Americas, camping, hiking, taking thousands of pictures and logging amazing adventures.
Some of his best adventures, though, were with his travel buddy and life companion, Kathy Lindsey. Kathy and Larry, partners for more than 35 years, explored Europe and the Mediterranean, often veering away from their tour group, off the beaten path, to find hidden gems where they were. They found beautiful sites, met lovely people (especially those Australians!), and of course had amazing food on their many travels. The corners of Budapest, Prague, Germany, France, and more will forever echo with memories of Kathy and Larry's laughter and love.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Larry was known for his kind heart, thoughtful conversations, and dedication to lifelong learning. He believed that knowledge had the power to transform lives and worked tirelessly to share that belief with others. Not all science, Larry was also passionate about the arts. He loved Picasso and Van Gogh, and Kathy and Larry enjoyed going to innumerable plays and musicals over the years.
Larry was like a father to Kathy's daughter, Megan, stepdad in every way. "He came to piano recitals and plays when I was young, my wedding when I was not so young, and full circle to attending my kids' events just like a grandpa would. He cried the first time he heard me play piano; and I cried the day we had to say goodbye. He is the reason I hung my first bird feeder, and the reason I will continue to marvel in the world around me. I know that in the hoot of every owl, the sight of every woodpecker, and the awe I feel in every waterfall, he will be here."
As was his way, Larry wanted to leave this life without a big ado. He will be laid to rest with his parents in a private burial. In lieu of any official memorial service, flowers, or donations, instead grab a Guiness (or a Modelo, or a Stella), and raise a toast to our friend, knowing that Larry's legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
