A longtime area resident, Larry was born on May 13, 1945, in Elwood, Indiana, to the late Clyde and Thelma Drake Henderson. While in high school his friends would call him “Bear”. While earning his bachelor’s degree at LSU, he played basketball alongside Pistol Pete Maravich and was known as the “Hatchet Man”. Larry continued his education with a master’s +30 at UL Lafayette and Southern University. A favorite pastime was watching all LSU sporting events, and he was an avid supporter until his passing.
Larry began his teaching career as a Special Education Teacher, in the East Baton Rouge School District, and then retired from Franklin High School after 30 years of service. His career was a calling to him. Larry would do anything for his students. There were many times that he would provide them with food, clothes, pizza parties, or even take them to McDonald’s for a treat. He cherished his students and their well-being.
