Larry James Shewman, born November 7, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home, October 10, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin W. Shewman in 1995; his mother, Viola Purnell Shewman in 2007; son, Christopher J. Shewman in 2019; brother, Monte D. Shewman in 2023; and brother-in-law, Lohr D. Pickering in 2016. Larry is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Rita K. (Pickering) Shewman; daughter, Kimberly (Steve) Davis; granddaughter, Heather (David) Davis Greutman; grandson, Phil Davis; two great-grandchildren, Ellie and Ben Greutman; sister-in-law, Fran Pickering; brother-in-law Don Lynn Pickering; and many more family and friends. Larry started out as a baker for two years at Schattachneider Bakery in Dayton, was a skilled polisher at NCR until they closed, and spent time in tool shops for several years. In 1969 Larry moved to Bellbrook. His true
passion was being a firefighter and he started in Bellbrook, Sugar Creek Fire Department, as a firefighter to Lt., then served as Battalion Chief and EMT. He touched the lives of many there. In 1983 he and his wife moved to Naples, Florida to manage a beautiful condo on the Gulf of Mexico until 1994 when they returned to Ohio to help his parents who were in bad health. He loved his nearly 15 years as a school bus driver for Jamestown-Greenview schools. For many years, until his passing, Larry had his emergency fire radio near him. During his time in Florida he loved taking cruises, twenty-one in all. He was a larger than life person, loved helping others, and was a devoted husband and father that loved life. He had a full life and touched many people in all his adventures. He will always be missed by many. Larry is at peace now. A "Celebration of Life" memorial service will be held
1:00 until 2:30 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2024 at Powers-Kell Funeral Home, Jamestown. The family asks that Memorial contributions be made to Crossroads Hospice, 8069 Washington Village Dr., Dayton, Ohio 45458.
