Larry Blue Smith, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, April 11th, 2023, at Oak Harbor Healthcare in Mt. Pleasant, SC, after an extended illness.
Larry was born in Lee County on December 25th, 1940, the only child of the late B.G. Smith and Nannie McNeill Smith. He joined the Sanford Fire Department in 1966 and retired as a Captain in 1997 after 30 years of service. Larry was known within the SFD as a strict leader, but also a practical joker. He was also a member of the Army National Guard from 1967 until he was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1972. Larry enjoyed working on cars and was an avid NASCAR fan. He will always be remembered for his ability to fix almost anything, a talent that he passed down to his two grandsons, who were his greatest joy in life.
Larry is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Brenda Griffin Smith, and his daughter, Victoria "Tori" Smith Lewis and her husband Lee Lewis, and grandsons Donald Lee Lewis, III and Zachary Lewis, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
The family will receive guests at 10 AM on Saturday, April 15th at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11 AM in the chapel with SFD Chaplain Father Craig Lister officiating. Burial will be at Jonesboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lee County Firefighters' Burned Children's Fund (LCFFBCF), David Nance - President, 2668 Steele Bridge Rd, Sanford, NC, 27330.
