Larry Charles Steffee, age 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Surf City, North Carolina, on January 21, 2026.

Larry was born on October 7, 1945, in Massillon, Ohio, to the late Robert F. and Elsie (Chivers) Steffee. He graduated from Washington High School in 1963 and soon afterward enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, serving for six years with the 350th Evacuation Hospital as an Army Medic—an early calling that would define a lifetime devoted to helping others.

On May 7, 1966, Larry married Esther M. (Adorjan) Steffee, and together they shared 59 years of marriage. Family was always at the heart of Larry’s life.

Larry began working for the Massillon Cemetery Association as soon as he was old enough and eventually became Cemetery Superintendent. In 1968, while continuing that role, he joined the City of Massillon Fire Department. Over the years, he rose through the ranks as a firefighter and paramedic, retiring as a Captain after a distinguished career defined by courage, compassion, and service to his community.

Never one to remain idle, Larry also developed a passion for photography, founding his own photography business. He took great pride in his work as a freelance photographer for The Evening Independent.

Larry was deeply involved in community service and civic life. He was an active member of numerous organizations, including the Massillon Jaycees, serving as president and receiving the Life Member Award; the Massillon 4th of July Committee; the Massillon Lions Club; and Massillon Moose Lodge 481. He was also a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. Whatever the cause, Larry was always present—ready to help family, friends, and neighbors.

After retiring from the Massillon Fire Department in 1995, Larry and Esther moved with their family to Topsail Island in North Carolina, intending to enjoy a quieter retirement at the beach. Retirement, however, came naturally only in name. Larry soon started a maintenance business and once again answered the call to public service by joining the Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad in Surf City. He served for nearly another 30 years, holding the roles of Assistant Chief and Safety Officer.

In total, Larry dedicated over half a century to service as a Firefighter and Paramedic/EMT, stepping away only when his health no longer allowed him to continue.

In addition to his wife, Esther, Larry is survived by his daughter, Lynnette C. Steffee of Leesburg, Florida; his son, Robert J. Steffee (Misty) of Holly Ridge, North Carolina; and his cherished grandchildren, Matthew (Reese) and Abigail Steffee.

Larry was lovingly accompanied in his later years by his grand-dog, Bella, who brought him comfort and joy. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver, Barbara, for her compassionate and devoted care.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Gary L. and Kenneth P. Steffee.

Larry Steffee retired to the beach—but never from his calling. His life was defined by service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed and gratefully remembered.
