Mr. Larry Dee Thornberry, age 90, of Richmond, husband of Margaret K. Thornberry, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Thornberry, the son of Glenn Thornberry and Virginia Kerns Thornberry, was born in Olive Hill, Kentucky on May 23, 1935. His love for sports began early in life. In 1951, he and his twin brother, Jerry, were on the State Championship basketball team. They also won the 1953 State Golf Championship representing the Clark County Cardinals.
Larry grew up in the grocery business. He was greatly influenced by his grandfather, C.V. Thornberry, who opened C.V. Thornberry & Son, a grocery store and wholesale warehouse in Winchester. In 1963, Larry and his wife, Margaret, moved to Richmond to operate Thornberry Super Value on Water Street. In 1969, the store moved to the bypass and was there for 40 years. Then, in 2009 they moved to the current location, Richmond Save-A-Lot on Atwood Drive until the business was sold in 2021.
The city of Richmond will also long remember Mr. Thornberry for his community involvement. He served on many boards and committees over the years. He especially enjoyed serving on the Gibson Bay Board during its inception along with his lifelong golfing buddies. He and his wife were also foster parents and helped mold the lives of many children during those years.
The most important aspect of the life of Larry Thornberry is that he was a man of deep faith and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He hosted Bible studies in his home and was one of God's servants who impacted many people over the years. His primary impact, however, was at home. He deeply loved his family and enjoyed spending time at the various activities of his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, Larry is survived by two daughters: Deborah (& Mark) McIntosh and Dina (& Kevin) Flynn, his son: Brian (& Lori) Thornberry, three grandchildren: Hannah Tseng (& Yu-Jui who goes by Ray,) Rachel (& Ryan) DeCoster and Cody Thornberry; two great grandchildren: Easton DeCoster and Darren DeCoster; his sisters-in-law: Ruth Thornberry and Winnie Williams, who was very special to Larry, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thornberry was preceded in death by his brothers: Jay D. Thornberry and Jerry Thornberry and his granddaughter: Savannah Thornberry.
The family has chosen private services.
The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to ministries that were important to Larry - VaporMinistries.org and Revival Hope Tabernacle of Richmond. These may be made at the funeral home or by mailing PO Box 569, Richmond KY 40476.
