Laura Mae Nicholas Mazzia, age 94, of Hot Springs, AR peacefully passed away on July 13, 2024 at the Green House Cottages of Wentworth Place in Magnolia, AR. Mrs. Mazzia was born in Mobile, AL on December 31, 1929 to Leon and Laura Jones Nicholas. She moved to Hot Springs in July 1949 after marrying Ferd J. Mazzia, Jr.
Mrs. Mazzia was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where through the years she was actively involved in the Altar Society, the school's annual bazaars, and in anything that helped build the church community. As an accomplished seamstress, she made clothing and designed and made many dance costumes as well as cheerleader uniforms. She loved to make quilts for family members and sewed many sequins and beads on her beautiful beaded Christmas ornaments.
Mrs. Mazzia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, as well as her brothers, William, Edwin, Emmett, and Claude Nicholas and her sisters, Mary Louise Johnston, Joan Marie McInnis and Loretta Jones.
Mrs. Mazzia is survived by her children Ferd J. Mazzia, III (Sylvia) of Hot Springs, AR, Ronald N. Mazzia (Nancy) of Lansing, KS, and Carmen V. Mazzia McMahen (Bobby) of Magnolia, AR, one brother, Arthur B. Nicholas (Joan) of Northville, MI and brother-in-law, John H. Hesterly of Aberdeen, MD. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren John Mazzia of Hot Springs, Jason Mazzia (Kaye) of Dardanelle, Kandee Swift (David) of Paragould, AR, Heather Robinson of Little Rock, Laura Linn McDill (Zack) of El Dorado, Mary Ellen McMahen of Gurdon, Nicole Frishman (Jackson) Pullman, WA, Becca Holt (Dave) of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth Ann Hiem (Tim) of Algonquin, IL, Chris Mazzia of Manhattan, KS,14 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Zack McDill, Brad Taunton, Bart Newman, David Swift, Kenneth Mazzia, and Ronnie Priest. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Knights of Columbus Council #6419.
Visitation and rosary will be at Caruth Funeral Home, 155 Section Line Road, Hot Springs, AR on Thursday, July 18, 2024 at from 6-8PM. A funeral Mass will be at 1:00PM on July 19, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Hot Springs, AR.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church parish hall building fund, 583 W. Grand Ave Suite A, Hot Springs, AR 71901.
